Sadly, even though wine was invented/discovered
by the ancient Greeks, many imagine that only 'Retsina' is on offer. It is true that some very poor Greek wine is produced, but
superb vintages await yourtaste buds! Many wine producers are now
producing modern style wines, with Greek reds consistently winning praise abroad.
British wine buyer Hugo Rose recently declared that ‘the reds are terrific –
think of the best of Italy and Spain combined.’ Top Greek white wines, also,
are scaling new heights, earning ever higher praise from international
observers.
This guide, details
some of my favourite choices - extensively
tasted by myself! I have added my tasting notes to assist you when
selecting from a Greek menu - especially when faced with labels
you cannot read! I hope this will lead to a better appreciation of Greece’s
remarkable diversity and add to your enjoyment of wine drinking.

'Pinks'
Restina
Retsina, is 'normal' wine that is often undrinkable or poor.
It is transferred to barrels made from Cyprus wood -
and left to mature. The resin seeps into the
wine giving it its particular flavour. Great at
lunchtime, but takes some getting used to,
but it is drinkable! Some locals add Sprite to their retsina - but they would not
normally admit to it.
