Sorry to be bearer of sad news but Kostas the fishing dog in Sidari is dead. Many people over the years have enjoyed his antics by the river which takes you over the Canal d' Amour. He was hit by a vehicle on Sidari beach, just after 6pm Greek time and was buried by 7.30. I will be investigating from the info given to me as to who was driving, but he was going too fast and he didn't stop. Very promptly Cheryl from CARE was down to help but it was too late. She organised for somewhere for him to be buried along with Melissa from surgery opposite the Alkion. It seemed to be a head injury. He will be missed by many tourists and locals alike. A real character jeni

Oh Jeni what very sad news , we said when we left the other week it would probably be the last time we saw him as he was so frail, he was part of Sidari, I will really miss not seeing him fishing and teaching the others to fish.

No Kostas was a big black and white hunting dog who followed some people down to Sidari from his village (about4km) found the river and from then on spent summers in Sidari and winters back in village. Last few years he even stayed winters though not so much fishing then as water was too cold. The three legged dog belonged to someone who only came for the summer.
Angela it's just a shame it had to end like this. The two main causes of death to strays is poison and road accidents, but we never thought of a road accident on a beach!!! He died within sight of his river.

Is he the mostly white with black patches who stood for ages in the water in the Canal d' Amour area. If so did he follow you for ages up and down the beach we fed him on many occasions. Please someone post a picture. I have many photos but not on here, so sad x

I will put one up from two weeks ago. It's not very good but he was being very cheeky to me outside Mythos restaurant, think he could smell the lamb and I took a chunk out for him, he just took it and trotted off.
Just added three, one is my avatar from last year and the other two from two weeks ago, it dreadful that he didn't just die of old age...very sad

So sad. He was a dog known by many, he will be missed. I remember him joining us for the firework celebrations on the 5th of November 2008, that Spiros from Sailors arranged. Kostas really enjoyed the 'free food' with no fishing involved!!!!! RIP Kostas, we will miss you x

It must be the one in my gallery taken some three years ago. Almost at the bottom in my gallery you will find two dogs, the colliey with three legs and I think the one you are all on about, but looking a bit younger but still fishing. Chris
Never met him but he didn't deserve to go like this. RIP Kostas xx

We heard the sad news when we were on our last night in Sidari and was extremely upset! I am so glad, though, that Kostas was loved by many.. we really took to him when we were there and we just knew that when we went on the beach he would come to greet us! We used to save left overs from tea for him and fed him on the beach all the time and he would just sit and rest next to us after digging himself a spot.
We really are devastated that he is gone, I seriously hope that the evil person did this realises what a legend he was and how much he will be missed so many tourists of Sidari.
Jeni and Cheryl do a fantastic job and they are absoloute super stars for the work that they do!
jeni- please could you post us the site out with the dogs to rescue on???
Thanks a lot. really glad we found this site. So devastated about Kostas... RIP xxxxxxxxxx

That is sad news, he was loved by everyone and will be missed but I'm sure he will be remembered for a very long time. God bless him.
Now, as for cars on the beach. A small child was within 2 inches of being knocked down recently on the beach in the evening and that was on the part with a sign that shows no cars allowed so yes of course the parents did not worry to let their child play there while they watched at a nearby table.
I park every day and night on the bit of beach (cars and parking permitted) behind a well known central Hotel (near harbour). I see the same cars with young greeks rallying the cars at full throttle up and down the beach, skidding round and round all the time.
If someone can PM me with details of the car and where it happened I might be able to point you in the right direction.
IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DRIVING/RALLYING/SPEEDING ON THE BEACH - GIVE THEM A PIECE OF YOUR MIND.

Hi Sunny pop,
We don't have a good description of the car as it was not a car but some kind of truck, and at the time the people where more interested in Kosta than the truck. Also as no one informed the police straight away. It will be hard to bring the culprit to justice but we will keep trying. But to add to you post about young Greeks racing around on the beach, if you see this every night, then have you informed the police about it?? as it is only time before it is a child and I personally would hate to think that I have sat by and watched these idiots every night and not tried to do anything. But if you have informed the police what response did you get?? Can you let me know as the beach is closed to cars except for the designated parking spots and it really needs to be jumped on before a child is seriously hurt. We can use all the information we can get about this problem as it will give us more fire power when we find someone to listen.

Absolutely devastated by the news of Kostas, we're due there next Friday and it just won't be the same without him. We always stay at Zafiri's so cross the Loxides bridge many times a day and always look out for him. He was a real character and definitely king of the dogs.
It's so sad that he went this way - you always wonder if he's survived the winter, but to go like this is awful. RIP Kostas xxx

Update on accident, an eye witness has said that truck was not speeding although has been seen to do so on other occasions. Also possible that he did not realise that he had hit the dog. As the police were not called to incident no legal action could be taken anyway. Council have not been either interested or forthcoming in returning calls made to them on Friday about the incident. Will still follow through on this as speeding on beach is still an issue according to sunnypop.
I have decided to create a special calendar commemorating Kosta. We have many pictures but if you have any particularly good shots please e mail them to me at jeniscafe at hotmail.com Thank you jeni

Very, very sad. We were looking forward to seeing him again next week. What a character he was!
Nice to know that there were so many people looking out for him though.

I remember him! well it might not of been him but it was a dog that looked very simular to the dog on the youtube video called Kosta the fishing dog it was in 2002 though so it may not be him. I really want to work at in Sadari and look after the dogs and work in a bar singing I love it †

We know ann but no-one actually made a formal complaint who saw the incident. We arranged his burial but legally our hands were tied as any prosecution was dependant on an eye witness going to police station and reporting the details and proving it was deliberate jeni

We need any photos of Kostas taken with people. Dont need any more of him fishing but any others especially in bars or with holidaymakers are needed for the calendar which will be available during the summer. Thanks jeni
