Paxos

I visited Paxos for the first time 20 years ago and have returned there for the last three years and am amazed at how little it has changed (fortunately). This year I will be introducing my son, his partner and 6month old baby to the island. Can anyone give me advice re what is important to take with us for the baby and any other advice re small children on the island.

Hi Floralie, welcome to the forum!

My daughter and her husband took my grandson for his first "foreign" holiday to Corfu when he was 5 months old and we're also introducing them to Paxos for the first time this year, when he'll be about 2 and a half, so I shall ask her what tips she has for you before I answer your question.

Are you as nervous and excited as I am?  We've been going to Paxos for about 15 years now, so they've heard us raving on about it endlessly.  I just hope it lives up to all their expectations after everything we've told them

Elaine

Hello -floralie

First off - welcome to the most friendly site on t"internet !

Please tell us where you are going to be staying / planning to stay - and that will help give some more accurate advice / feedback.

I agree that there are not so many obvious changes to the island in 20 years - but as a father of a little one myself I do notice safety issues that we in the UK might occassionaly frown upon - for example access to poolsides at private villas - and such.   To be fair - the general standards of child safety are pretty good on the island - and I really dont think you will have any problems at all.

I am totally sure that your family will LOVE this island paradise - but as a Paxos devotee - I would welcome your reply - and the opportinity to answer as many question as I can -

Kind regards

SIMON

We took our small children to Paxos a long time ago. The locals of course are very child friendly. Don't be put off staying somewhere fairly remote but make sure you have a light weight buggy and backpack child carrier. Also make sure you have the use of a safe child's cot. Finally make friends with the local taxi drivers and bus operatives.

Thank you all so much for the advice. We will be staying close to Orkos beach (my favourite) and look forward to getting fit by walking to and from Lakka! I really hope that my family will love Paxos as much as I do. I have been looking at Paxos on the Google Earth site - it looks amazing on the new version.

Hi Floralie

Just spoken to my daughter and asked her for any tips for you.  When they went to Corfu, they actually bought Sam a seat on the plane so that he would have his own luggage allowance - and even then they were overweight!

Some of the things she said she could have done without were nappies - very easy to get over there - and a bottle heater - she used a pan to heat his bottle.  She also took lots of clothes for him to wear in the evenings and then found that she was putting him in his PJs before they went out at night, so that they wouldn't need to wake him up to change his clothes when they got home, so he only wore a few t-shirts during the day.

Another non-essential heavyweight item was a fortnight's supply of ready-mixed formula!  She was unsure whether she would be able to get the brand that  he was used to and thought that taking ready-mix would save a lot of hassle, but she now thinks that carrying the extra weight was probably not worth the small inconvenience of having to mix it fresh each time from powder.

One thing that they didn't take with them, but bought as soon as they arrived and which they found absolutely invaluable, was a small blow-up child's dinghy.  As well as its intended use, it also acted as a bath, a paddling pool and a play pen for him.

Other useful things were mozzie nets for the buggy and cot and one of those net bags which are meant for slinging over the back of car seats, but which they used on the plane for keeping all his bits and pieces together that they needed for the flight.

She's promised to have a think about it and, if she comes up with any more ideas, I'll let you know.

My Sister had 2 babies on the island & could get all she needed there for nappies, food etc. Nappies are expensive but as you are only there for 2 weeks the extra is worth the saving in weight. Just make sure you have plenty when you travel (both ways) in case the boats miss. You never know where you may end up or for how long, and not much available at the airport. You will be best travelling light with a a child anyway as you will be on & off lots of transport & may have to carry luggage a distance.

As Elaine says the baby will wear little most of the time. You can allways rinse & have it dry the same day. I am a good Girl Guide & thrive on the theory of 1 to wear, 1 to wash & 1 drying theory when away. I am allways astonished by how much luggage fellow travellers take, especially as they spend most days wearing at most a few bits of cloth & a contented smile. I manage with my 20kg and that includes presents & strange requests for the family (the best were a coffee machine & a wok).

Children are welcome everywhere & if staying near locals will make you instant friends. They & tourists will flock to have a look & a cluck. Older children will have no problems finding friends of all nationalities & play & chat away in their own languages being understood by others with that natural instinct that most adults lose! I am sure the baby will thrive even with slightly different food & milk. Most seem very calm, probably because everyone on holiday tends to be so laid back on our favourite island.

Thank you Elaine and Tina for all your good advice - the blow-up dinghy is a really clever idea. Does anyone know anything about diving on Paxos ? My son is a keen diver and wonders whether it would be worth taking his diving equipment.

There used to be a dive centre in Lakka, but the website hasn't been updated since 2004, so I'm not sure if it's still there - Tina may know:-

The diving school is still there in Lakka but unfortunately they did not have the licence renewed due to some new regulations. Greece was restrictive about diving apparently & now some new rules came in (EU no doubt) and Paul was in communication with the Port Authorities to get things sorted out. This was in July last year. Hopefully they have got the correct bits of paper and will be operating now. Try the number on the website. If you have any problems I will check to see if my Sister knows the latest news.

If you are going to Orkos Beach ( my favourite too) I'm sure you know you will need a baby backpack & something for the baby to sleep in/on. Good luck!
