Definately...trouble is it gets harder to contemplate a move on your own as you get older. However with even a tiny lotto win I will be there in a minute!

So how many "Shirley Valentines" does it take before any given country's character is so diluted that it's no longer attractive enough to tempt any others?

Awww I thought this was a "fun" thread! [:)
I would if I could be spontaneous (sp) enough! I would love to do a spur of the moment thing and leg it, but I am sure more research would have to be done, I dont like the cold !

Think there will always be an attraction Jim, that will tempt others. A new summer season is just about to begin. I don't think it does dilute the character but will be interesting what other people have to say.
Think it will always be attractive

I don't quite see the attraction myself. I don't mean the attraction of Greece but the self-deluding attraction of "doing a Shirley Valentine".
If I've got the hang of it, it's something along the lines of:
"Bored housewife stuck in a rut - goes to Greece on a whim - meets a Scottish Irish-Italian pretending to be Greek - falls in "love" with an imagined version of the person/place - gets dumped - hubby turns up having miraculously turned back the years of being a slob - they discover themselves again and waltz off into the sunset."
If people want to discover themselves, they don't need to run away from their lives - they need to look inside themselves and encourage the frightened/bored kid they find in there to come out into the open air. At the very least, they need to get a grip on who and where they really are. You can't run from the boring bits of yourself, they just come with you...so grab 'em by the throat and knock some sense into them!
There is a good quote in Shirley Valentine, however:
"So don't talk to me about the English. Because while the Greeks were building roads and cities and temples, what were the English doing? I'll tell you what the English were doing. They were running around in loincloths, plowing up the earth with the arse bone of a giraffe!"

Jimj40 ... it's a dream a fantasy ... both part of the human condition and feelings. Please don't deny us access to our dreams we all have them.

Jimjim, I can't deny people their dreams - and wouldn't if I could. And I appreciate the "fun" element of the posting.
However, I've met many people, in Greece and elsewhere, who did the Shirley Valentine Trip and regretted it. They simply took everything that made their lives boring with them (usually simply themselves) and then bemoaned the fact that X-country wasn't what they thought it was going to be. People who just throw up everything with no planning or sensible strategies are not simply ruining their own dreams and aspirations but also those of others who might be more sensible. They just end up wondering where the next dose of Marmite/marmalade/PG-tips is coming from and complaining that the staff at the local dole office don't speak English.
I've made my own views plain elsewhere but, by and large, the polite version of the principle is "If you're fed up in your own country, you'll probably be just as unhappy elsewhere, so do yourself and the rest of us a favour....".

blimey.. jim we are only having a laugh, i know people , and i dont just mean females who have and are planning to move to Greece , but its not always because they are unhappy in thier own country ,its a joke thread get a sense of humour , we like a laugh on here sometimes to brighten up our days ,keeps our thoughts of Greece with us , and hey we are all aloud to dream arent we ?

Hi Jim,I'm sure we all appreciate you views and concerns, but I do think you are doing us a dis service by thinking some people might jump in feet first, and then use their brains. The mundane things in life have to be done,no matter what country one moves to.I'm sure if I won the lottery today,ok,I would be financially secure for the rest of my life, but even spending all the dosh would become a chore! It is nice to dream,'what if'I moved to the country of my dreams ,or what If I won the lottery, they are dreams and plans, and in most cases will never happen, but it doesn't stop us from daydreaming and planning.I am sure everyone on these boards know'that the other mans grass is always greener'

Came very close to doing a Shirley Valentine, its along time ago 33 years now but I was so tempted fell in love with Corfu and a young Greek, Came back year after year for three years to see him, got to know his family, We wrote to each other all the time he even wanted to get married, But I was young only 16 and the thought of leaving my family was a step to far. But I wonder what if!!!!

It is a fun topic Helen W. especially when contemplated while looking out the window here where it's snowing AGAIN!! I think JimJ was just trying to make it an even more lively discussion...
Quoting: "So how many "Shirley Valentines" does it take before any given country's character is so diluted that it's no longer attractive enough to tempt any others?"
My husband's family like many in Corfu has a certain amount of Italian DNA but I would never(least of all on March 25th) suggest they are any sort of diluted Greeks. I think the Greek character and tradition has a strength that can easily absorb some Xeni wives (and husbands, thinking of that other amusing clash of cultures, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding.") The more interesting question to me and maybe to some others here, is can we stand up to it??

totally agree with you, in fact when you marry or become involved with a greek family you have no choice but to be 'absorped' and whilst I have adapted in most ways to the greek way of life I WILL NOT GIVE UP MY MARMITE AND TETLEY TBAGS!!!!!!!!! ,and why should i?????? just because I made a decision to move abroad, for whatever my reasons were, dosnt mean I have to give up everything else, saying that I do not regret for one minute moving here.

I moved to Corfu in 1977 and as another poster mentioned it was not so easy in those days. Greek mother in laws were very tough and did not approve of Xeni daughters in law. You had to fight to be allowed any decisions in your marriage. Maybe I was just unlucky to have a controlling Ma in law.. Now my Greek EX-Mother in law thinks I am great.......
I am planning to retire to Corfu. It has changed so much since I first visited in 1973 ( Not all for the better) but I feel more at home there.
