Did anyone see the 'twister' that they had down in Lefkimi early this morning? It was on the national news here in Corfu earlier this evening. It did alot of damage taking roofs off houses etc. As far as I know there were no injuries to anybody.

Cant possibly be related, but the national news here in UK showed two tornado weather columns passing Majorca today, no damage reported, but very impresive pictures.

it was my house that lost the roof in dragotina ! a roof came off the olive factory and the church ( all the tombstones are gone ! the olive factory lost a huge steel door and only found it late today . there were 3 more houses that lost roofs in st peters and 2 big boats thrown onto the car park at the port we are gutted ! not so much about the estamated damage we had being around 6000 euros but more about the trees ! im am currently building the house so we were not in it , but the reason we bought the land was its location and the surrounding veiws !all the surrounding olive groves and beutifull cypress trees are now nothing more than ugly jagged stumps , i was so happy to have 2 oak trees in my garden as ive not seen any others here but i dont even know where they are now ! our rear garden was secluded and private and now its open to the world and i have a new veiw of a huge steel pylon ! i have lost my caravan that bounced over the roof of the house and was of found 50m in thousends of pieces away and my lovely honda is crushed ! but i had good english and greek support and we had new tiles delivered and back on (to a fashion) within 5 hours ! and the clear up continues

Sorry to hear your house was caught in the tornado - it must have been terrible. At least you and your family were not in at the time. Good luck with your clear up.

Only been back in the UK for 2 days when our neighbour phoned to say that we had lost part of our roof and guttering but not to worry as he was organising the repair straight away and when we get back in January we won't even notice its been done. Lovely man. We live in Stavros so it looks like its affected quite a large area.
Regards Denise

This is sad news, but its good to hear nobody was hurt and that the local community pull together to help with repairs quickly.
Trevor, whilst new trees can be planted it takes so long for them to grow. It must be really sad to see those oaks and the olive and cypress trees gone as it changes the landscape/scenary for decades. I hope it doesn't change your dream and that you can finish your house and help the community plant new trees.

Tornadoes like that one on the you-tube clip, seem to be quite common around Corfu.... I know I've seen a few up here.
I caught the news clip of the 'Lefkimmi tornado' the following morning on breakfast TV .... and it was a hell of a lot bigger (looked like the 'wide' American ones!!).

Yes we had a small one up here you could see it on top of the hill above the trees with all branches blowing round in it, only lasted about 30 secons or so

Tornadoes never last all that long but can be seriously destructive
We were in Antigua some years ago and were hit by a hurricane, but it's not them that really cause the serious damage. Hurricanes can generate tornadoes and that's what trashed a visible arc through our hotel complex, ripping off roofs, uprooting trees etc. but leaving everything either side, untouched
Mother Nature can't be tamed or controlled and we all have to learn to live with it
But I have to admit, this is the first I have heard of tornadoes in Corfu!

Were did you get that from ....
(it's not them that really cause the serious damage.)
Both are as bad as one another with the damage they both cause....A hurricane can be as wide as three hundred miles wide...yes i agree with a tornado they do not last long..But tell that to the people that that live in Tornado ally in Oklahoman in the U.S.Of A....I agree a tornado's can do damage to one side of the road and not the other side undamage....A hurricane does damage in all its path....No matter what side of the road you are on...
The wind speed of a Hurricane can reach up to 200m.p.h and Tornado's even further by as much as five hundred M.P.H....
I to was in Dominica in 1998 when Hurricane George hit us full on ...Huricane George cost the lives of more 150 people more than most hurricanes that have gone through the Caribbean in the last twenty years(apart from New orliens).....The fact is hurricane can last up to a week in just one place be for it moves on like in Cancun (Mexico)a few years back....Huricane George lasted a whole day over us and we had Ten hours of pure hell on earth stuck in the bath room be for it move on..I have some pictures of my self wading through the damage it cause in Dominica...Yes mother nature can be so awesome in the power she has....
It was also a Tornado that hit Birmingham ripped roofs of houses and left the opposit side of the road untouched and sorry to say its getting more common with global warming we are having in this country..And as well in europe...
