Can anyone currently living in Corfu tell me how I can obtain a new GB passport? I have been told that I have to send all the documentation including payment and my current passport to Athens. Surely not??! ... and if I have to send back the current passport (which still has several months to run) how do I get back to the UK in an emergency if I have to? Any help/advice would be gratefully received. Thanks, Wendy

We had to do this. We were without a passport for nearly a month. We did this through the Consulate. This was a few years ago and if I remember rightly, they will assist you in an emergency. Best check with them though as things may have changed.

If you're concerned, if you are going back to the UK at some point, you could renew it there.

Yes afraid so right pain but I think you can now pay by credit card which is an improvement from having to send the money through the post office! Consulate will only give you renewal forms then you do the rest.

I have renewed both my passport and my childrens via Athen they offer a very quick service usually about 10 days, just go to   ukingreece.fco.gov.uk       All the information you need is there and you can also download the forms from there.

We've recently renewed ours and decided eventually to get it done in UK. We got photocopies of the old ones in case of emergency and sent the passports back with freinds to be renewed. I have heard of some new passports being returned by a courier who checks for identity of recipient, but I don't know how common this is. It might mean you need to be in UK when they're returned.
If you renew over here, it is possible to obtain some sort of postal order at the post office to forward with your passport as payment.

All passports are now sent by courier and you have to sign for it. You would have to be in the UK and make an appointment to go to the passport office to renew. It's all to do with the new style passports. Some friends got one for their son in America but pretended he was here. Should have made him get it himself over there as it was the 3rd he had lost and he is 30!!!!! Not sure how they got around the signing bit.

As they are all in computer systems now I wouldn't like to try and obtain one in the UK when I wasn't actually there, it may show something up next time you go through customs, especially the lad in America which is a nightmare getting into at best of times.

I have just renewed my passport via the UK. A friend took it back with her and another friend who returned on Sunday brought it back. It was delivered by courier to my mothers house and she signed for it.

Only thing is, this isn't strictly legal as when you sign your passport form you are declaring that the address used is your own!

Thing is it's more expensive to renew via Athens.

I did mine and a new passport for my daughter via Athens, peak season and it still only took 10 days, this was 2 years ago and when I costed it out I didnt think it was worth the extra hassle of sending to the UK etc. Printed off the forms from the internet, got the pics done locally, postal order from the local post office and the post office send it registered post, I didnt even have to get my daughters birth cert translated into English which I was very surprised about!

Agree, supposed short cuts can often make things more complicated
