We heat our house in England with Calor LPG gas. This also provides hot water and fuel for a gas hob. This costs what we consider to be a king's ransom! As a matter of interest, how much is it in Corfu?
(Our system uses 2 x 47kg bottles together, total price £90.00.)

Hi Viv,
There's some info here.
Bottled Gas

I rang Rados in Sidari and he quoted me 70Euros for a 47kg bottle but that included the "metal" which was the hire of the bottle so you could ring direct and check the gas price.

I bought 2 x 10kg bottles last week, 17.50€ each in Acharavi.

Not taking into account the 'less per kg for larger quantities' factor, Viv's LPG costs 95p per kg, whilst mine is 1.75€ per kg, which on todays exchange rate works out at £1.55 per kg - ouch!

... oh, and I already had the bottles, so I wasn't paying for those...

Sounds like a wood burning stove with LPG back up would be cheaper maybe ? Logs are 100E per pick up truck load, don't know how long that would last but just the heat from the stove can be sufficient to warm a small house through.

Steve - a friend of mine with a little 45sqm house has a small somber (log burner). She likes to keep warm so the fire is lit normally from early afternoon onwards in winter. She uses just over a tonne of wood a year - cost around 90-100€. Added benefit that she can also boil her kettle or heat soup on the top

Hi Rocky,Bill and steve

We to have a Somber it heats the house really well (and we can cook or boil the kettle on top of it), we also designed the pipe to go through the bedroom and attached a Heat Exchanger onto it, so we also have a warm bedroom . (free central heating)
Our cooker is completely Gas, this was quite hard to find in Corfu, most are Gas top and Electric oven.
So to "heat and cook" we pay as you go

I've found a brilliant way to keep warm - bought the kids a Wii fit for Christmas, but have discovered the delights of it myself! Brilliant as long as we don't have a power cut

I do agree Tully, a somber is an excellent way of keeping the house nice and warm, and routing the flue/pipe through other rooms distributes the heat very well, especially with a heat exchanger. We're waiting for a roof to be replaced before fitting a somber ourselves.

There are some wonderful crosses between a log fire and somber available these days that are specially designed to feed heat throughout the house, and they burn about half the amount of wood that a standard log fire will get through. The marble shop at Platonas stocks them.

Steve - yes mate, it goes well with "bread underneath" and "veg on the side".

We have three gas bottles ,one for a Calor Gas heater one for a gas BBQ both brought over from the UK,and the third one we use for a Delonghi cooker purchased at the DIY shop no problem at the Sidari Cross roads next to Diellas,we had the choice of all gas or gas hob and electric oven,we opted for the gas oven.
We buy our gas from the supermarket facing Diellas, hand in your gas bottle to the man outside who will give you a ticket, then pay for it at the till.
I think last year we paid 15 euros for the gas with our own bottle, the first time 21 euros that included the gas and the bottle .

Strange how we all have different experiances with the same things.
For instance when we bought our first gas bottle, there was no extra charge for the container, we just payed for the gas, which in those days was about 5 to 7e, we get our gas from one of the kafeneons in the village, as a convenience, one of the neighbours in our hamlet, keeps half a dozen bottles in their yard, and we pay at the kafeneon when we get round to it.
Love the laid back style, long may it remain.
Bob.

I'm still interested to know the price of 47 kg bottle of LPG in Corfu.

Interesting posts though.....

Bill, sadly we are a Wi-free household at the moment, though younger daughter has just purchased an X-Box 360 elite, which gets me hot under the collar as I get very involved watching her and her dad play Moto GP. At the moment, just going outside for a few minutes here in SW England makes our house, however poorly heated, feel toasty warm. :-)

Hi Viv,
Where are you in the UK to get gas bottles at that price.
Here on the Isle of Wight we are paying £68.20 each.Know we are being ripped off but all LPG suppliers charge the same here.(sorry know its off topic...but interested)

Sorry, Steve; I wasn't paying proper attention! Thanks, Bruce, for pointing that out. I'd still be interested to know how much refills are.
Overner, we are in darkest Wiltshire. £90.00 per two bottles is refill price. Are you really paying £68.20 for refill of one bottle? Cripes!
We have no mains gas here and when we had the Calor system installed it seemed like a good option....but now I wish we'd gone for oil or a woodburner (though the latter weren't as efficient or versatile as they are nowadays.)

Forgive my ignorance but what is a 'somber' as opposed to a woodburning stove - first time I have heard of it?

Thanks.

"Somba" is the Greek for "heater" or possibly "stove", so it covers wood-burners, calor gas, petrol and electric heaters as opposed to central heating. I think most Corfiots use the term quite loosely.

Sorry

Jumping into this discussion late but can anyone tell me if the "regulators" for the gas bottles are the same in Corfu as the UK?
I plan on sending a gas BBQ to my house in Kassiopi for this summer and wondered if I need to purchase a new regulator.

My woodburning "somba" heats downstairs to a degree but not the upstairs.   I have a double facet, glass door wood-burning fire which heats both sitting rooms and gives a lovely warm presence in the house.   It is not the cold that gets to me but the damp.   Therefore I use background central heating run on oil.   As mine is a newly-built (renovated) house it is still a bit damp and the central heating costs about 500 euros a winter to run and wood for the "somba" comes from the garden.   My house is 200 square metres so takes a bit of heating but this keeps it toasty warm, bearing in mind that I do not go out to work and am in my house all the time.

Costs for us about the same as Lavinia for a similar sized house. As she says, damp is the problem, not the cold. It dosn't matter how warm or dry your house is, the air is still damp and I find that the fire helps with this as it draws the air through. I will say though that I feel the cold more in Corfu than I ever do in England. We have a friend a couple of villages away (Greek) who used to teach languages in Aberdeen and now he has retired back to Corfu and he says exactly the same, he has never felt as cold in Aberdeen as he does every year in Corfu because of the damp air.

Tommyb, You will need to buy a new regulator and connecter. These are sold at most hardware shops. Check out the following posts.

I understand petrol is around 1.30E per litre in Corfu currently so does anybody know if this has affected bottled gas prices over there ?

I rang Rados in Sidari today about the bottled gas price and the lady told me that 47kg bottles don't exist ! I told her that the boss, who speaks good English, quoted me 70E in January. I rang back later as she requested and she had telephoned the supplier who reiterated that 47kgs is not a standard size in Corfu.
The largest they keep is 25kgs and that costs 47E just for the gas which is what others have said on here so prices don't appear to have changed just yet.
I'm wondering if the larger ones are sold through industrial outlets eg forktruck dealers etc.
