Does anyone know if there are any noise restrictions in Corfu preventing building work during the afternoon?

Thanks

When working on our house we have always been as quiet as possible during the afternoons you can always tell when its siesta time as the village goes very very quiet once the children start to reapear we take this as a cue to resume work. this is for a small village obviously in a larger town or larger village it could be different.

Not so bad as other places in Greece, on Crete many years ago once had police come round to my bar because someone had complained that two of my customers were playing tavli (backgammon) too loud outside!

Probably polite to only try to do quieter jobs between 2 and 5.30 or so.

I seem to remember that there are laws protecting the right to peace and quiet of local residents during certain times of day. Siesta is one of them (2 till 6 maybe?) and I think the other is from midnight till about 7.00.

I can't remember the exact times nor where I read this. Was it on here? No, it was in an on-line copy of Island magazine. Susanna may be able to help as I think it was her husband who wrote the article.

I think they can work up till 3 or 3.30pm and after 5pm. Often they will carry on though if you don't complain. Also they can start from 7am.

depends if you want to start a lasting relationship with your neighbours or not! Where are you building and how close are others to you?

Agni is right. Basically it is all about give-and-take and getting on with your neighbours. Officially, I think, it is 2.30 till 5, but we normally lunch at 3, and sleep from 4 till 6 in the summer.

It is definitely not "on" to phone a Greek family between 3 and 6 during the summer, and safer not to do so in the winter either. Loud noise is even more frowned upon. If you are noisy you'll probably get it (and more) back again in the future!

between 3 and 6 just to be on the safe side!

I get the impression things vary a little from village to village, but we certainly have to remain very quiet between around 2.30pm and 5.45pm in summer. Winter is more relaxed as most of the villagers are working on the land, making the most of the light.

Last summer my (then) 6 year old was told off for rollerskating down the road at 4.30pm, and the local Albanians (who don't seem to siesta) are regularly rebuked by the village cobbler for talking in the kafenion opposite his house during the afternoons!

Our local carpenter has been putting a roof on the house behind ours in the last few days. He stops making any noise at 3.30pm on the dot.
