Cheers BBB. This might produce some good information on the subject of moving, what to do, etc. I will set the recorder for this.

Essential viewing! Trouble is - the producers really don't have a vested interest in things going well........
If everything goes smoothly (which building project anywhere in the world doesn't have its ups and downs?) it will not be "good telly".
Also - the editing could make even the most reasonable of people appear demanding/selfish/foolish etc.
That being said I'll be goggling with everyone else to look for tips and take note of any pitfalls during the renovation.
We were approached by a number of people making T.V programmes and/or writing articles when we were buying our house - all we could tell them was that several local people worked very hard and very professionally to help us, that we had to wait for a while and (eventually) we got the the house we wanted. Boring innit?
By the way - does anyone know how much cash these programes pay ?

HI All
If you have this week's radio times, you won't actually need to watch it to know what happens but I won't spoil it for everyone.

Yes, a really detrmined couple - they deserve to succeed. The only thing that puzzled me was, that despite doing a lot of work himself, the budget of 40,000 pounds (plus overspend of 30,000 Euros) seemed incredibly low especially as it included a swimming pool. Perhaps I need his advice!!

I hope they do well, they certainly deserve it. Hopefully the programme should have earn't them a few bookings, I thought the finished building was beautiful, especially after seeing the ramshackle ruin that it started out as.

Thats something I forgot to mention in my post, the Greek villagers (people), how nice they were in the way they helped, allowing walls and trees to be moved. Real and true Greek hospitatlity. And the guy who allowed them to stay rent free in the apartment after she had the baby.
Sorry, but very doubtful that would happen at home.
Best Wishes.

My Sky has been on the blink and packed up completely 5 minutes before the end.....I take it they got it all up and running in the end...the man is a trojan!!...it was very poignant when he broke down in the hospital.

Hi violator.
Yes they did, although the way the programme was running, you did not think they would, but in the last 5 minutes or so, they flashed forward, and it was all done, and it looked great. Just a case now of getting the punters in for holidays.
I agree on the hospital seen, it must have been pinnacle of things that could have gone wrong.
Good Luck to them for the future to come.
Best Wishes.

Hi all,
What was that bit about needing a '4 keys' rating to register with the tourist authority - having to have certain amount of sq m to make tourist lets??
We are looking at building some holiday lets and had not heard of this in Corfu. Anyone know if there are any size restrictions on Corfu holiday lets and if you need a licence etc. ?
regards,
Paul

If I remember correctly they needed a 3 key rating to run as a holiday accommodation, but 4 keys to actually register with the tourist industry. This meant having not less that (I think) 45sq metres. When they measured internally, they were only at 44.4 something of total floor space in the units, but then they found a clause that the measurements included the walls, and being thick walls gave them the extra square meterage they required.
Whether this is the same in Corfu, not sure, but might be worth checking out with one of the real estate guys, or Hilary at the Corfiot Mag.
Best Wishes.

I was glued to the set. It was absolutely amazing what they achieved. I wish them the very best of luck and hope they get enough tourists to make it a going concern. It was nice to seem them learning a little greek considering they didnt know any when they moved. That would be pretty scary for me, I'd have to have a little knowledge before I did anything like that. It was sad at first when they had to take that lemon tree down, but its nice to see that they have been integrated into the village.
It does give you a very good insight into what could go wrong and what did.
Very enjoyable

I'd love to see a programme done as a follow up to show how the family have settled in, say after 2 years or so, that would be really interesting.

Hi kary.
I believe the programme does. I remember seeing the same programme last year, and there was a follow up programme. In fact I think it was the actual follow up part we saw.
Lets hope so, it would be good. I do hope they make out OK, they put enough in to do so.
Best Wishes.

What a great programme and what a lovely couple. They deserve to succeed in whatever they do. They are a loss to this country and an asset to Greece. Wasn't it nice to see the young one integrating into the infants school.? It was a testimony to a strong marriage, they obviously loved each other to bits.
It was in strong contrast to that silly programme about the guy who couldn't have his panoramic window.( ugh.) screened a few weeks ago.

That couple were really an inspiration to us all, especially the lucky ones who are thinking of uprooting from england to greece, they have shown with a lot of hard work and determination you can do it!! And what a lovely life their two young boys will have!

Alredy posted on this, but have to agree whole heartedly with Alecko. They new what they wanted from the outset, and set out to achieve it.
The eldest boy at school amazed me also how he was answering questions and learning in Greek. I am struggling like made to learn.
Good Luck again to them.
Best Wishes.

Hi folks
I went off to my nightschool class, forgot to set the vcr and MISSED IT!!!!!!!
I had read a review in the Radio Times which indicated they were in for a lot of heartache and it was difficult to watch. Nice to know they made it in the end.
My uncle and aunt moved out to Crete just 12 months ago. Fortunately they do not have to work. They are firmly settled now, having happily and succesfully survived their first winter. Whilst holidaying there they had formed good relationships with a local family and were gently steered towards buying in a greek residential area rather than a development aimed at british buyers. They bought 'off plan' and though there are always going to be a couple of niggles with any building project they experienced nothing like the troubles of that twit with the window.
So that's another destination added to my 'to go to' list! Deedee
