Hello!
Next year we are planning on moving to Corfu, but I have not passed my driving test yet and I am wanting to do it when I come to Corfu as I am unable to do it in the UK as I have been unwell and had a 'ban' put on me, although I am fit and well I am not permitted to drive just yet.
When I arrive in Corfu I really could do with my license to drive car or ride a scooter to get about. Do I need to get my provisional?
In the UK I know you can ride a scooter on a provisional, does the same apply in Corfu?
Many thanks

I think you will find you will at least need a provisional licence. To hire a car or a scooter you will need to have a full driving licence and aged 23.
All the best with your move.

SusieH reference tells everything. I remember when my daughter applied for hers during the summer break from uni we had tears as she had to apply for Residence permit which had to be valid for 185 days! She did it the next year and passed!

I passed my test last summer both bike and car. There is a theory test for both but you can do it in English, your teacher just has to tell the testing centre when they put your paper work in. Its all on computer touch screen but you do have to the tests in town and have to pass the theory before going on to the driving, the lessons I had were in Greek but only because I went to a school where the instructor didnt speak much English my choice. But I speak and understand Greek just wasnt confident enough to do theories in Greek but it really isnt a problem. When I did my theories there were people doing it in German as well. I also had both books for my lessons in English hope this helps

Having read your post and several of your others relating to your planning to move to Corfu next year, I was almost tempted to quote Delboy Trotter from the sitcom, "Only Fools and Horses" and say, 'Rodney, you ...! " However, I won't!
As I recall, you have previously said that you have limited Greek; you want to find employment but aren't sure doing what; you don't have a place to live here and now you want to obtain a driving licence in Greece.
Speaking from personal experience, much of this could be dealt with before your planned move. Obtaining your driving licence would definitely be easier. If you have health issues that preclude you from driving in the UK they will almost certainly apply here too.
If you are indeed planning a move to Corfu, well done for attempting to forward plan.
I could be wrong, but I don't recall you ever mentioning what it is that has attracted you to Corfu. It is, of course, your business. I do hope that you don't think that life as a foreigner is easier in Greece as you may well be disappointed.
More pleasant, yes ... quieter ... yes, more laid back ... yes, easier ... hmmm! I'm not so sure.
Good luck anyway!

Hey that's a bit harsh theCorfiot. We who have changed our lives and moved here have done it for our own reasons. Sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't. But if it is something you have a disire to do, nothing ventured, nothing gained. And I for one wish you all the best almostrodney.

Makes me wonder why you have been refused a licence in the UK through medical reasons but hope you can get one in Greece. Driving conditions and the standard of driving are both far worse than the UK, Greece has officially the 4th worst drivers in Europe behind Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, so it would worry me if I wasn't 100% capable of driving in the UK, never mind Europe.

Good luck with your planned move rodney, hopefully things will work out for you. One worrying thing is if you have been advised not to drive in the UK for medical reasons then surely for the safety of others in whatever country you should take the advice and not drive until you have the all clear!!..julesxxx

Hi Polly-Anna.
Thecorfiot post might be hard but true, what is the point in saying hi its great heir you could do what you like and get away with it when its getting harder to live heir all the time with the Greeks having a hard time to get by let alone sumone that gust hopes to find a Job then take his driving licence over heir.
I wish him all the luck in getting heir and living the life he hopes will be heir.
Ray.

It's harder now for us than when we moved here and we have a reasonable pension. It is very hard for Greeks to earn a living at the moment, let alone anyone who doesn't speak the language and who may end up scratching around trying desperately to make a living.
It would be have been an entirely different situation for us if we had had to work when we moved here. Whether we would have been able to find work is one thing. Whether we would have wanted to have worked long days in the summer with temperatures above 35 degrees is an entirely different matter.
Personally, I wouldn't have wanted to do it, but if that's what you want, then surely it's best to have the negative side as well as the positive from people who have made the decision before you.
I think people should know both sides, good and bad, before making such a life changing decision.

Hi all, your comments are always appreciated good and bad. We are fully aware that it may just all go completely wrong, that is why I have asked so many questions because I like 100% pure facts. If it does not work then we are happy to come home, but if it does then... Winner! We have been saving for this for a while now, and have had many ideas. We are over in September and have visits lined up to views apartments and are in regular contact with some.
I did think as much for the driving over there. I am better now and have been since Christmas but my 'ban' so to speak runs out in January, and we plan on moving out in February/March next year.
Again thank you all for answering my questions, you have all been so kind.
