Upon viewing our house empty for the first time before we flew back to the UK the following day(our house had tenants in it,and we felt we were intruding on them if we started to have a good nosey poke about,so we didn't delve into anything ,although the lady tenant implied with her hand gestures to feel free to look around we felt it was an intrusion on her home at that point). We knew what was entailed with the purchase, the condition of the house and things that were staying in it.
Nearly to my point now,we were told by the owners of our accomadation in San Stef when I asked how we got rid of 'junk', that in the winter, two or three times a month if you left unwanted items of household goods on the road side, the 'council'would come along and remove them.Does anyone know if this is correct, and if this service is provided in the summer months as well.?
Also, the house has an open fireplace that we have seen working, the cooker is electric,my question is,is it cheaper to cook by calorgas or use the electic cooker left behind, and would a calorgas heater(as we already have one in our loft )be as good as an open fire,or just to use if it goes chilly? I'm sure I'll come up with more questions, but these two if answered can be taken off my hit list.

I don't think it is as often as twice a month - but yes, 'junk' can be left at the roadside for collection.
In fact people are starting to leave some items now - I've just added a microwave to the pile myself!!! You just have to wait & see when neighbours start to leave things - there are no 'set' times'.
Most of the 'junk', especially metal items are collected up & made good use of.......... I got a set of shelves for my shed last year, that a shop had chucked out!!!! And a friend of ours got some 'new' bar stools!! By the time the 'proper' collection people come , a lot of the stuff has been taken!!
It is something that is always done in the winter though, it is not nice to have all this stuff on the roadside in the summer season.

If you have an open fire - you will need wood - so it is not always the cheaper option, unless you also have your own trees. I have an open fire, and often in the evenings, we will have an inside 'BBQ' on that.....that will save both gas & electric!!!

Thanks Orchard for that info, believe me 'this is junk'years and years of it,but I am looking forward to scowering what other people leave at the roadside, you never know what one can find that might have a good use.I understand that we have fruit trees, not managed to get to the bottom of the orchard yet it's too long, but the BBQ on an open fire sounds good.A bit like bonfirenight in the UK(lol),in the summer we will eat out or BBQ outdoors.

Look out for other peoples building sites aswell, they often put out signs to leave your junk at the edge of their property, they use a lot of it instead of normal hardcore to level out areas of land.

Maggy, we have just purchased an all gas cooker to use with calor gas and have already noticed how much less electric we are using, within days, we have now got kettle to boil on the cooker, as we already know that this uses a lot of electricity and have started buying energy saving light bulbs, we have solar panels to heat our water and this year will be installing our wood burning stove, as we have a lot of wood from our olive trees, we are keeping account of the difference in our bills but I know now that we are making a difference to what we were spending and will keep updates as how we are finding.
I love cooking, making stocks, jams and pickles and I am confident that I will be making a saving,
Rosy

Our notice says that the 'junk' will be collected on Friday - but most things are claimed straight away - nothing much left there now ........we have dumped a microwave, and 2 DVD players - all grabbed right away!!!
we also got ourselves another set of shelves for the shed!

In central areas "junk" piled at designated places is collected by council lorries monthly throughout the year. I cannot however speak for the rest of the island.

If you are good with your chain-saw - you will find people who'd use your services......... you do a deal, probably do the job for free & take half the wood for example.
Or the easy way, is just to order a truck of ready cut logs - delivered to your door.
