Hi All.......Do any of the site members currently moor a boat at Gouvia ? We are using an ex-pat called David Nash to look after things when we are not there . I just thought that as we are all out at different times that we check each others craft for loose lines , open covers etc .
If we had a list of boat names , pontoon numbers etc . it would be useful.
Perhaps we could all swap notes on best practice , experiences etc . What do you think ? This will be our first season on the water out in Corfu so any help , tips would be appreciated .
Regards.............John & Hilary

Hi John & Hilary,
I personally do not own a boat, although I wish I did. But I think it is a brilliant idea. Not being a boat owner, I would be more than happy to wonder around to the Marina and check on things if I am in Corfu at a different time to yourselves, and I think any other members visiting that region would do so as well.
A list of Boat Owners, and/or visiting members would be a great idea.

I have a boat in Gouvia, seems like a good idea to me! How we gonna do it then? It's probably not a good idea to have a list available to just anyone, it's just what crooks need, boat name, berth, when the owner is not there etc....
I'm in th UK till the end of this month (or maybe longer based on the UK weather forecast for next week), but spend most of the year on Corfu and a couple of nights a week on board, not far to stagger from the Beer Bucket or Navvies!!!!

A good point Zeuter. Perhaps notification from members when they are going nearer the time on this thread. Then the boat owners notify that person of details via PM or private email.
Good point to think about though.

Hi Zeuter.........Yes it is a good point re: crooks........It is not something you think about when thinking of Corfu and the local people , but there must be undesirables that would use the info to their advantage , altho marina security is pretty good ? Or is it ?
Please pm me with your boat type etc [ I hasten to add I am not one of the undesirables I mentioned , at least I think not ] .But I think Sailor has a good point . If we all make contact via pm or personal email we can keep in touch and form a "club" of sorts who look out for each other and share problems/fixes .

How will you be able to check that anyone that does make contact is truly who they say they are, and that the details that they provide are genuine?
Sorry to be a party pooper.
Surely it would be easier and safer to make friends with one or more of the residents of the marina and get them to monitor your boats, this is what I did the one winter my boat was in the marina.
Bob.

Hi Bob......I suppose I am too trusting a person .......But the object of the excercise is to bring together members of the website at Agni that have things in common with each other .
What can take years of accidental bumping into people can be achieved in such a short time if people are open and honest..........We are building on Corfu at the moment and have had to do things on trust , at some point in life if you want to achieve a dream then you have to drop your guard and trust others that in your opinion/gut feel are worthy of that trust..........Sorry to be so heavy........

Just curious, John and Hilary: Is your David Nash the same David who lives with Daphne at the marina? If it is, I met him 4 years ago at Takis' in Kondokali. Seems like a very nice chap.

Hi John,
I totally agree with you. I can understand completely what Bob is saying. However, as longs as you choose the people/members to trust in your own opinion, then what you are looking for/to achieve is possible.
In addition to what has been said above, perhaps an email/telephone call to the Gouvia Marina Office giving details of who would be checking ones boat. This could be clarified if necessary with giving identification, i.e, ones passport, etc.
Just a thought.

Sorry I don't know who Dave is living with , but I do know he lives at an old pig farm..Thesis Matzorou in Potamos just outside of Gouvia . He has been skippering boats around the med for the last 20 years or so . He now runs a boat maintenance company with 2 others .

I can't believe how much inaccurate info gets posted on message boards - I'm sure David Nash would be most interested to hear that he lives with Daphne and lives on an old pig farm! That's how these rumours get started... Out of respect - and discretion - I won't put up David's true personal details, but I think he'll be amused by the fictitious version!

Hi Nafsica,
I am sorry to hear that you read a lot of inaccurate information posted on Message Boards. I can assure you the majority of information posted on the Corfu Travel Guide is as accurate as possible, using a lot of research into its findings.
In this case, firstly, I must point at that the original post from Portia, was a curiosity question referring to this person David Nash. There is here, a possibility that there is two people with name David Nash. Portia's question was not stating a fact about the David Nash you presumably know.
As far as the pig farm issue, John & Hilary do categorically claim to know David Nash, therefore I would summize that in accordance with their post, does live on an old pig farm. Probably not a pig farm now, but it the sense that it use to be.
Rather than claiming that message boards give accurate information, then why do you not give us the accurate information that you claim to make void what has been said.
Regards.

Perhaps I wrote what I did out of sheer horror that the real David Nash was being somewhat misrepresented. I assure you that I have seen for myself what a lot of accurate, informative and interesting info gets posted on these msg boards.
It's just that when referring to an actual person it doesn't seem right to me to speculate about him or her.
I've been shocked to see some rather mischievous comments on these (and other) msg boards about members of our community - it causes harm and distress and doesn't seem to me to be deserved.
I'm not saying that what was written about Dave is harmful, just a tad inaccurate! His wife is called Tina and his work premises are on the site of an old pigfarm, but he doesn't live there.
OK - can we be friends now? Incidentally, the David who does live with Daphne is also a very nice chap - good singer too!

Hello Nafsica , You seem to know Dave very well . Do you know him well enough to JOKINGLY tell him to pull his finger out and fit the windlass on our boat ??
The info I had about Dave was from a collegue in the UK that Dave has done boat work for the last 20 or so years , his name is Mel Herman , do you know him ? His boat is a 53 ft cruiser , and he took it to Turkey 3-4 years ago , but next spring is returning to Gouvia having missed Corfu so much . I think Dave might be interested in his return !
Where does Dave live if not in Potamos ? Do you also know Andy and Tony that work with him ?
Regards.......John

She is right you know, and to prove the point, when forced to give the information she was withholding from discretion she got it wrong too LOL you see it wasn't a pigfarm it was a chicken farm!!!
On another note I know Mel Herman and look forward to seeing him again having waved him away from the quay when setting of for Turkey. I hope they had a good time there. It will be good to see "Premier Cru" and her yellow funnell in the marina again...
If you speak to him give him regards from Peter at Force 5?
Going back to nafsica and her post, I would like to share with you a case of mistaken information from another forum, namely YBW (a yachtie forum).
A few months ago someone posted a message looking for info on Gouvia Marina. Among the many answers there was one guy who said nobody should take water from the marina as it contained asbestos!! What had really happened is someone told him it contained "asvestio" which is the greek word for Calcium and nothing to do with asbestos. thank God only 48 people have read the post/thread and the damage is not too great. Can you imagine the libel case the marina could make against YBW? (Although I suppose they bear no responsibility for posts - or do they?)
Also John and Hilary might I jump to the conclusion that the name of your boat strikes a happy chord?
Look forward to your replies!!

Whoo! I think we've settled THAT! Nafsica, I'm ever so glad that the David who lives with Daphne is known to someone, as I haven't heard from either of them for awhile. It is apparent that Nash is not the last name of the aforementioned David. May we just leave it there? As someone rightly pointed out, I was only positing a question, not making a statement at all!
Glad we cleared that up!
Thanks for the info.
