...I am the same in mine Sean as its all Greek to me..Unless its in English(lol)..There is one Greek song that i have come to love as it always re-mines me of Greece and i start to play it more often as my Greek holiday is coming up is O KAIMOS..I have also heard it being sung as the music starts up by the Greeks but only ever heard the musical version of it....It on greek record called 24 Golden hits (The best of Theodrakis).....
Sad as it is i will not go into a taverna unless it is playing greek music...Chris

You've just hit on my favourite subject Jim, I have loads of Greek music which I have been collecting for many years. I've got all of the music that you mentioned apart from the Maria Farandouri song. I love her singing the Theodorakis song ' Sto periyiali to krifo'.
I went to see Yiannis Parios in London in October,at the Royal Albert Hall so heard him singing 'Kokkino Garifallo'. He was magnificent!!
There is such a range of music and I love it all from the Rembetika through to the modern singers. You are right there are loads of songs full of tears, even if you can't understand all the words you can get the feeling of them from the music. I couldn't begin to tell you my favorite songs, the list would be too long!

SCRIPT>..The best time we had was when we went to the Acropolis in Athens to see a tribute to Mikis Theodorakis It featured George Dalaras and the metropole orchestra...It was a warm night and packed to the brim the acoustics was out this world just went on and on and on around the Acropolis you could hear a pin drop... Songs like raining in the poor neighbourhood...When George stop singing all the ordinance started singing to it was magic.....Beautifu city...To the end we had a rendition of Zorba's dance even my self joined in and i cant dance to save my life....To end the night with hankies in hand and little but hardly any Greek to my knowledge (But mined to the music he sang Pain...Twice he at to sing it we would not let him go...What a night to remember....And in a wonderful seting of the Acropolis in a wonderful city....Chris

Do you ever listed to Marios Frangoulis? He is a fantastic tenor but the CDs which I have found tend to be mainly popular songs and I really would like him to sing more opera.

I really wanted to get some Greek music, but didn't know where to start, so my friend gave me a couple of CD's - Kostas "Eimai Ethoh" (my favourite) which is quite modern but very sing-along-able, Yannis Parios Love Songs which gets me in the holiday mood and an old "20 Greek top songs" with Antonis Kaloyannis, Dimitris Mitropanos, Elpida etc which I have to be in the mood for! Will check out some of the ones above on iTunes to see if I can increase my collection...

The one I listen to most,is Atakakai Epi Toupo,by Dousika,though there is another song,Signomi something or other,cant remember the full title,that I heard,when i first went to Corfu,in 1992,and haven't heard since.I cant remember the tune,all i can remember,is that,whenever i heard it,i had to stop,and listened to it!
I've asked all sorts of people,in music shops,and i've even asked musicians,but no one knows,perhaps i imagined it,bobbo

Yep, that is a good track by Doukissa! The best one on the album, I'd say.
I'm gonna stick my neck out and suggest that the other song you mention is probably Signomi Yia Tin Amina by George Dalaras - it came out in 1992 and is from the album of the same title....

You had me racking my brains there! It's Politiki Kouzina in Greek and I absolutely agree, it's a lovely soundtrack and an amusing film. While we're on the subject of soundtracks, I don't think there's anything to beat the Stou Othona Ta Xronia. Every track is a corker!
If I had to pick a single track encapsulating Greece for me, it would have to be Gounaris singing Ena Vradi Pou'vrehe

Haris Alexiou has to be my favourite, she has in my oppinion the most hauntingly beautiful voice. I first heard one of her CD's in Rhodes, I now have 3 and play them whenever I need my Greek fix

Linda2, who cares how he sings...have you seen Marios Frangoulis? Easy on the eyes and the ears, although i admit i dont listen to much opera. These days i have no choice but to listen to what's blasting out of the kids bedrooms...there's some really good Greek pop music, although i moan at them i do rather like it. The Greek children tend to listen to the Greek and the UK charts.

Would it be this one Bobbo signomi by Antonis Remos. i often play greek music whilst i read the threads, youtube is awash with great songs from greece
Wouldn't have thought so, Bluemoon - Bobbo reckoned it was "Signomi something" and that he heard it in 1992. Remos didn't start recording until 1996, I believe.

Fair enough; they can sing. But they've got a way to go before they reach the standard of Dalaras/Bithikotsis or Glykeria/Marinella ....

Got to be Notis Sfakianakis every time.
I agree !! What a fabulous voice he has. I saw him at Wembley Conference Centre on his first visit to London in 1996 just as he was becoming famous. He sang 'Soma mou' and ' O Aetos' which are still very special songs in Greece. I saw him also on his second visit to Wembley Arena a few years ago and he was fantastic. He couldn't understand why no-one in the audience was allowed to dance, due to Health & Safety and all that. Not quite the same as in Greece !!
There are so many fabulous singers, I've also seen George Dalaras in London, and Adonis Remos. I'd love to see them in Greece though, a totally different experience! There are so many different styles of song,I don't think you can say one is better that the other....it's a personal thing. Songs bring back memories of different times and places to everyone. I for one would be lost without my Greek music. OK, I'm off to play some now...................................

That's actually En Mediteranée by Georges Moustaki (a non-Greek speaking Franco-Greek and ex-lover of Edith Piaf). He's one of the best French singers ever and he sings it a lot better than Dalaras does (and I say that even though I'm a great fan of Dalaras).

Bringing up an old thread here I know, but I went with a group of us to a concert at the Corfu stadium, next to the airport, on saturday night to see Michalis Hatziyiannis (best spelling I could do), one of Greece's top pop stars of the moment. Excellent, great fun and a lot of Brits there. He's extremely talented, sings and plays his own music, great with the crowd and very entertaining. Well worth seeing, it was absolutely packed there and we had a great evening.

How fabulous ! Yes he is a great singer, he performed in the closing ceremony of the Olympics in Athens in 2004. I bet there would have been loads of Greek people that would have loved to go but had to work on Saturday night.
I'm so jealous wish I could have been there !
