Hi there all, I am planning to move out to Corfu from London sometime this autumn. I was wandering if I need to take a Greek driving test or will my licence for here which i have had for over ten years cover me?

Thanks a lot,

Gondo

Hi Gondo.

Your own driving licence as a member of an EU country will suffice, as long as it is not of the old green type, but either the pink licence, or the new card licence. However it may pay to get an International Driving Licence. You can get this from the RAC/AA websites. If you want a Greek driving licence then you will have to apply, and probably take another test.

Best Wishes.

Hi

Your UK driving license is fully valid in all EU countries, including Greece.

Please note that by Greek law you MUST have your license with you at all times when driving. Police run random blocks and this is one of the things they check. The others are ownership documentation, insurance and MOT. Blocks are most common before Easter and Christmas bonus payouts, as it seems the police are told to get in fines to finance the bonuses!

They also check for seat belts, which must be worn by law.

When riding a motobike, a helmet must be worn. You'd never think it, would you, though I must say it's more more common than it used to be. Police will pull non-wearers up at blocks.

One thing I have noticed, is that if the police are not on a specific case, they will ignore violations. This means if you're not wearing a helmet, and a police car will pass you without doing anything. They'll only pull you up if there's a block which is specifically looking for this.

This was how I got away with driving without numberplates for 18 months (not my fault - it was a mistake with the paperwork which couldn't be resolved quickly). As long as I avoided blocks, the police just turned a blind eye. Incidentally, other drivers will flash and make writing movements to warn you of upcoming blocks so you can choose to go another way round!

Hi

If you have th old style (UK) green licence, as I do. then you will also need an International Driving Permit.

Where do you get one of them?. I only have the old green type and was going to hire a car this year for the first time.

I have been hiring cars in Corfu several times a year using my green license. It seems to work fine and the police seem quite happy with it also.

Just noticed this old post on driving license,

I bought a car from a dealer in Acharavi about 3 months ago, as I arrived to pick the car up, the Salesman said I will just be 5 minute’s, I am just going to deliver this car. I asked him why the customer was not going to pick it up themselves, he told me because she couldn't drive.

Why then was she buying a car if she didn't have a license I asked? "oh she has a licence, she bought one, she just can't drive".

The mind boggles

Mmmm! Us Greekophiles still have a long way to go to actually get into the mindset of the Greek syche'(spelling?)

This is the sort of thing that I enjoy, we are all the same in the eyes of God, but we are all different.

Brill!

You might even say that MOST of the locals can't drive

There are some poor driver's about, but tell you what, some of those youngster's can handle those little powerful car's quite well.

At least over here, we don’t have to sit behind someone doing 50mph in the middle or outside lane of a motorway, don’t miss that one bit

Paxos
What I couldn't understand with my pink licence was the fact that when I sent it to DVLC in the UK (after I left) to have my address changed to Paxos, they returned it and said don't worry until it needs renewing
