Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good codeine alternative, my wife suffers with really bad migraines and finds migraleve are all that works with a really bad one (and nurofen plus with a not so bad one). Now I read on these boards yesterday that codeine is illegal in greece and both these tablets have codeine in.

So does anyone know of a good codeine alternative british or greek? What do greeks use instead of codeine? I can't find any strong painkillers over here without codeine.

Thanks for the help

woody

Hi Woody, don't know what they use instead but I always go to the local greek pharmacy in sidari for their recommendations and purchase pain killers from them, just as effective and depending on what they are, they can be sometimes cheaper than home.  If you explain the to pharmacist what you need I'm sure they will assist and offer a suitable alternative.  xx

Easiest thing for your wife to do is to go to your GP and explain the problem and get hi tp prescribe some codeine for her. So long as it is on prescription and in a box with her name on it from the pharmacy there will be no problem.

Hi Woody,

Don't worry about taking your tablets with you, my wife has to take tablets that are not allowed in in many of the places we visit, eg Singapore and you would not like to get stopped there for tablets that are not legal.

Just go to your doctor and aks for a prescription and even a letter from her doctor with her tablets on but DO NOT have it filled with this and if the tablets have your wife's name on you will have no problems.  Having said this we have NEVER been asked about any of the tablets, even when asked to empty your bags, due to a spot check.

TheChef.

Hi Woody

I would not worry too much, I have to take loads of tablets with me wherever I go and have never been asked about them

Enjoy your holiday

I suffer from dreadful migrains and use diclofenac (Voltarol) instead of the codeine based ones.

Codeine can be addictive and also causes dreadful constipation.

I would ask your GP though as none of us on here are medically qualified.

Hi Woody,

I have to take alot of medication with me when I go away (including Codine) I get a letter from my GP stating that I need this and have never had a problem the only thing I've not been able to take with me are syringes though I have always managed to get these at the local phamacy.

Hope this helps

Happy Holidays

I used to take Codeine with me to Corfu for migraine, I never realised it is a banned drug in Greece, never had any problem though.

Thankfully I don't need it so much now, but do have to take tablets for high blood pressure with me, I always carry my prescription details with me and the tablets in question in their respective boxes and in a pharmacy bag, just in case I do get stopped.

If your in any doubt then see you GP, he will, as mentioned before, write you a letter regarding your medication, don't let it worry you and spoil your holiday

Woody  Like already said you can take codeine with you I e-mailed the Greek embassy in London the reply they sent back was to get a letter from your Doctor this is the e-mail that was sent back to me. baza

Hello,

Yes this is true, so you will need a prescrition or letter from your doctor confirming that you need this particular medication for medical reasons.

Best Regards,

Konstantinos
