You perhaps thinking of Boutari?

The site wine guide may give you some ideas http://www.agni.gr/food_and_wine/wine_guide.asp

Hi Gryffenndor

I would reccomend In a taverna you try the house wine - its usually about half the price of bottled stuff - and equally (well usually) as good.

We tend to drink Rose in Greece as its usally excellent (dry to medium dry)

for a 'sold everywhere' table wine from the supermarkets 'Makedonikos'  is prety reliable - and sold in Red White and Rose - you will regognise it by the distinctive shaped bottle with its fat bottom - square sides and narrow neck - and No I am not tlking about the mother-in-law !

For anyone who knows the wine I'm talking about "Mavrodaphne of Patras" goes on sale in Makro at £3.49 a bottle starting Wednesday.

This is a sweet red wine, almost like a sweet port and is wonderful to drink as a dessert wine, or with stronger cheeses.

I'm sending hubby to Makro on Wednesday to stock up!

You'll also be able to find this wine on sale in Corfu.

BTW, our very own "Sailor" is a huge fan of this wine.

For anyone that prefers med sweet to the usually dry greek wines try imiglyklos, usually available in red or white in the supermarkets for about 3 euros a 1.5 litre bottle.Very moorish chilled, on the balcony with feta at 5 pm. Sets you up for your evening meal.

Mic & I both like the Rose Boutari, but whenever we go to Corfu, or anywhere else in Greece we try the local house wines - can be a bit potent but I've never had a bad one (well not that I remember )

Boutari is a make rather than a type.

Boutari is the largest wine producer in Greece, manufacturing regional wines as well as blends such as their famouse Boutari Rose'.

There was once a TV programme tracing the growth of the Boutari name, at the time it was the only wine producer large enough to conform to EEC regulations and to be recognised by the other wine producers in Europe as a seriouse contender.

The only trouble with rose' wine is that it tends to go down too easily, and does'nt seem to be alcoholic, wrong!

Bob.

Hi All you Wine drinkers I never really drank wine untill I went to Corfu........ Then it's only white wine that i drink with every meal...the red I don't really like.

What I would to know is what white wine should I drink (only have about half a bottle if that) that won't make me fill like I've had half of bottle of Brandy when I leave the Taverna...

I went to skiathos many years ago on an all inclusive holiday and the wine was included with the meal obviously you didn't get a choice just a one small carafe of red and white to a table.

Bearing in mind this was a long time ago the wine wasn't up to much but everyone always went for the white wine as they said it tasted better.  So I always went for the red wine so I got more .  My hubby was one of the white wine drinkers too so didn't get so much.  He said I don't know how you can drink the red and I told him they taste the same.

The Rep didn't believe either me so I blindfolded them and made them taste them both - guess what they couldn't tell the difference - how stupid of me I didn't get as much after that LOL

a reasonably priced very decent table wine,(personally prefer my red wine chilled)is APPELEA black label(ithink thats how you spell it) very easy to drink not over the top in alchol stakes,we have also noticed that a few restaurants also serve this as house wine (not complaining) it also comes in white

Apelia (one p) also comes in a semi sweet red, which can be disconccerting if taken unawares.

Can also be bought in 11/2 and 2 ltr bottles, cheap as chips.

Many of the tavernas use 3 and 5 ltr jars of Italian wine as house wine, bought in bulk, reasonable quality.

Others use barrells of wine that I havent found the origines of, but also there a quite a number who spend part of their winter touring the Corfiet vinyards(not that there are many) and across to the mainland, for next years supplies.

But the real kafeneons and Greek for Greeks tavernas serve their homemade wine, which is often an aquired taste. There is a saying that after the first few glasses wine all tastes the same, this aint' neccessarily so. (I feel a song coming on)

Bob.
