My Family and Other Animals is getting a lot of press on this site at the moment.  I am a huge fan of Gerald Durrell and have read the book loads of times.   Until today I never paid much attention to Lawrence Durrell (apart from knowing he lived in The White House in Kalami).  I've now realised (dummy!!) that Lawrence was a married man living with his wife in Corfu during the time covered in My Family and Other Animals - yet his wife is never mentioned and for all intents and purposes he appears to be single and living with his family.  Any ideas why Gerald would have done this?

Marymouse - I believe that Gerald's book was acknowedged to be inaccurate with regard to some of the family details- according to Lawrence's biography he and his first wife Nancy lived in Corfu at the same time as the rest of the family moved there (in the TV programme this week there was a scene where he was with a girl referred to as "Nancy" although it was never mentioned that they were married then, which I think they were) - I'd understood that Lawrence and Nancy they lived in Kalamii in the White House in the pre-war 1930s. so can only assume that the rest of the family lived in a separate house somewhere but for the purposes of the book Gerald has put them all together - as they seem to be quite an eccentric bunch it probably didn't bother them!

It was generally known, and reported by Miller, a long life friend of Lawrences, that Lawrence and Nancy argued considerably, whilst living on Corfu between 1935 and 1941. They living in Kalami, and the rest of the family elsewhere. It appears because of this that Lawrence spent a lot of time with his family, plus the fact that it was his idea to move to Corfu in the first place.

Lawrence and Nancy, now with child, left Corfu, fleeing the Nazi regime, and went to Egypt, where later in December 1943, Lawrence wrot to Miller and told him that he and Nancy had split up. They finally divorced in 1951, so that Lawrence could marry his second wife. Incidentally he married four time in total.

Yammas, Chris.

Also - thanks Bobbo - it was a bit of a daftly serious question in the first place!!  I shall satisfy myself with the thought that I love the book and Corfu (though I definitely did not love the programme!).

Thank you so much for that explanation Chris. I must admit that I'd  wondered about it too!

Hi Hazel.

Many a story told by my Mother of the Durrell family, hence my interest. My Mother was Nanny to Gerald Durrells own family, sadly not in Corfu though, but back here at home.

Yammas, Chris.

I've found this interesting little website:

http://www.shoarns.com/MargoDurrell.html

As I imagined, the photo of Margo Durrell shows a dark haired young girl, nothing like the portrayal in the adaptation on television a few days ago. It has lots of photos of Bournemouth for you Chris!

Many thanks Hazel, some good pictures of the home. I will have to check the paper work, but I think that is where my mother started her Nanny work, but I am not sure.

Really enjoyed reading all this.  I was never really interested in G.Durrell when the program came out years ago, but having been on holiday this year to Corfu for the first time,  watching the latest tv adaptation was a must.  Must look for the books.  Loved reading the biography bits here. very interesting.

Hi

Why was Lawrence single - because Gerrald never let the facts stand in the way of a good story!

Yes Martyn I agree with you, that's the way a good novelist writes, takes a bit of fact and mixes it with fiction.
