Corfu

Hello everyone. It's our first visit to Corfu and we're wondering where to base ourselves. Thought we'd try & leave a message to tap into this wonderful resource.

What we like:- hill walking, quiet location but with some taverna's for eating out, small bays for swimming, self catering (traditional buildings if poss).

Are we asking for too much, or is there a place on Corfu just for us. We will be there from 25 Sept for 1 week. Hope you can help. Thank you.

Hi Steve R1

Welcome to the site.  I'm sure everybody will be suggesting their favourite place so I thought I'd get in first

We stay in Kassiopi which is a lovely fishing village but has plenty of bars and tavernas.  The people, locals and tourists, are really friendly.  If you want to do some walking I'd recommend that you get Stephan's map which is truly a work of art and, more importantly, accurate as we have found most of the other maps not to be. Wherever you decide to go have a great time.

Hi Steve, welcome to the site. There are a good number of resorts on Corfu that would fulfill your criteria. However the North East might well suit you best. San Stephanos and Kalami are ideal if you like walking. There are some lovely coastal paths and you can walk between the resorts and have a dip in the sea or a taverna lunch on the way bliss. We haven't been in September before, but we are doing so this year, having spent two weeks there in early June when the weather was mixed but still very enjoyable.  You will get many different ideas from CTG members,so you should have fun sifting through before you make your final choice.  Yammas Polly

The question you really have to ask is exactly what do we want. Of course I love paleocastritsa but it is not for everyone-it is very quiet, few young families and no mad bars. However it is an older age group (35plus and a few elderly) and the name of the game is relaxation. As I lie on my sunbed I do see many people heading off with walking shoes on and I know the area behind the resort is lovely for walking. There are five little bays for swimming and the sea is clear -you can see forever (remember Shirley Valentine!) but cold!

However if you want more buzz then I think Kassiopi or Kalami is maybe more for you. This site will give you plenty of information so that you can make your choice. Enjoy our island.

The whole island is made out of beautiful places, not the flatest place on earth, but made for walking,as long as You got a hat, water, binoculars,a decent stick and walking boots! The north of the island is steeper, with lovely bays and villages, while the south is gentler, with lovely beaches and villages.

If I were to go on my own,I think I would first like to do the coast route, which doesn't really exist, then walk the interior, should take about 5 years.

Take the time to visit Corfu town, and take the ferry to Vido, the island half a mile off the town, say hello to my sioster Jill, who runs her little bar outside the taverna, and walk round and across the island. There are lovely views of Corfu,Albania and the Greek mainland.Vido is full of surprises, tame wild rabbits and pheasants, there is a herd  of shhep and goats, and a nature reserve, bobbo

You might want to consider the north-west coast. Have a look at my site (see below). Agios Georgios north fits your requirements well. Although the walking is not hill-walking in the Snowdonia sense the wooded hills provide some beautiful rural walks.

Hi there,

Having been to Corfu twice we stayed both times in the northern part of Corfu in Arillas  The second time at the Bardis Sun Apartments which is the most welcomest and friendlyiest place you could wish to stay.  This is a authentic Greek run holiday apartment which we have booked to go back to next May.

Arillas itself is charming.  Well suited for the type of off the beaten track, quiet, relaxing holiday destination you may like.  Having hired quad bikes, we actually this time ventured out and about to Afionas, which has a taverna on the top of a mountain which overlooks the most fabulous bay, cant remember the name something like St Georgis Bay.  There are plenty of walks, however very hilly but breath taking.

Hope this helps a little, have a great time

We always stay in Agios Stefanos NE, which I think might fit the bill.  It's quiet, and consists of four tavernas, two bars and some small shops.  The (pebbly) beach is perfect for snorkelling (very still and not at all busy, even in the middle of the high season when we go!), and if you wanted to explore all the other secluded bays around the area you could hire a little motorboat (you're normally allowed to go along from Kassiopi to Agni, or maybe a bit further).  It's always been too hot for hill walking when we've been there (mid to late July), but I'm sure it's possible - with a hire car, you're within easy reach of Pantokrator, and even walking from the village I would imagine there are plenty of lovely areas within reach.

Hope this helps!

Sounds like Barbati may be the place for you - bit quiet for me but it's horses for courses as they say.  Check out the links on this site which give you a good overall review of all the resorts.

Have a great time.
