Hi,
We will be visiting Corfu for the first time in late April.
We are driving over and as we will have the car we hope to do a lot of exploring. My main interest is old churches, monasteries etc. I believe there are a couple in Corfu Town worth visiting but would be very grateful if anyone could recommend anywhere in other parts of the island.
I look forward to hearing your recommendations.
With thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,
First and foremost a very warm welcome to the Corfu Travel Guide from all members, we are here to help all visitors.
There are some very nice churches in the old part of Corfu town and of course the famous one at the end of the airport runway shown on so many postcards.
Another monastery you must visit is at Paleocastritsa located above the village. The views from the top over the local bays are fantastic.
Yammas, Colin.

I think there is a monastery somewhere near Ag. Matheos. If you drive from Gardiki (a ruined fort in case you are interested) in the direction of Ano Garouna there are signposts for it.
Have a good trip, you are visiting the island at a lovely time of year.

The monastery at Paleo is stunning, the view is amazing and the monastery truly beautiful. We bought wine and almonds and honey there for gifts. The place was full of an assortment of old moggies as well.
I wish we spent more time there.

I know everyone will know this, so forgive me if you do, but when visiting these lovely places, you must be respectful and cover up.
I have to hold my hands up on this one, but I was very naive on my first visit and had a cover up on over my bikini, which covered my arms and down to my knees. I was given a severe telling off by a Greek lady who handed me a huge itchy woolen skirt and a heavy shawl and as the weather was over 90 degrees I truly suffered. I learnt the hard way and was truly embarassed, and rightly should have been.

Yes, sometimes we don't have bad intentions, but we do the wrong thing.... I was once admonished severely for chewing gum ( wasn't even blowing bubbles)before entering the temple in Jerusalem where Jesus was born - (That was over 30 years ago, and I shall never forget it) Be mindful....we may be on vacation but pay due respect to the sites we visit. Thanks, Purrypuss, for your reminder. Love and light, Carin
P.S. What is a moggie?? Thanks.

THERE ARE MANY MONASTERIES ALL OVER THE ISLAND YOU'LL FIND THE ONS IN THE SMALL VILLAGES VERY INTERESTING, AS YOU WILL HAVE THE CAR YOU WILL BE ABLE TO VISIT MANY OFF THE BEATEN TRACK, ONE TO RECCOMEND IS IN "SGOURADES" NOT THE ONE IN THE VILLAGE BUT JUST DOWN OFF THE MAIN ROAD. THERE IS ONLY ONE NUN THER WHO SPEAKS VERY GOOD ENGLISH AMONGST MANY OTHER LANGUAGES WHO WILL GLADLY SHOW YOU AROUND & SEE ALL THE RENOVATION WORK THAT SHE HAS HAD DONE OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, & SHE WILL BE KIND ENOUGH TO OFFER YOU A CUP OF TEA TO KEEP YOU GOING.

Thank you Bernie and SJW.
Visiting places off the beaten track is exactly what I am hoping to do. I am not sure where Sgourades is but my friends have an excellent map at their place. I am sure we will find it.
Thank you for the tip.

Hello Brian,
Sure, there are very many beautiful churches and monasteries around the island, but don't overlook those in Town. St. Spiridon's with the mummified remains of our patron saint is a must. Both the Orthodox and Catholic Cathedrals are well worth a visit and there are also two very old Catholic churches, St. Francis and Tenedos, relics of the Venetian occupation. Enquire at the Catholic Cathedral about access to those. You may also see the Chapel of St. George as part of a visit to the Old Fort.
The large church at Giannades is very imposing too. Have a good tour. Ocay.

I have just written a list of churches and monasteries for the site at http://www.corfuholidays.biz. It will be posted on that site later this week.
It gives details of the buildings , what to see, how to find it, and the age of the church or monastery. It doesn't include all of them, as there are over 800 in Corfu. Hope it helps!

The Church of Saints Jason and Sossipatros in Garitsa (around the bay from Corfu Town) is very old--about 11th century--and well worth seeing.
About the need to dress modestly...naturally one does so out of respect, especially when visiting a monastery. But as with so many things in Greece, who gets chided for inadequate coverage can be somewhat arbitrary. As my daughters have observed, tourists or those assumed to be tourists may very well be spoken to if they wear an otherwise demure sleeveless dress, but young Greek women seem to be able to get away with visiting church dressed to go clubbing.
I just put that in the same category with the police officer smoking at his desk under the no-smoking sign...

Would it be appropriate to wear pants (slacks, jeans?) to enter these churches? I know the arms should not be bare, but does one need to wear a dress?? Or are pants acceptable? (Providing one is a female, of course) Thanks, Love and light, Carin

Of course you can wear trousers Carin, on a Sunday in church most Greek women wear trousers these days!!
There was a case I remember a few years ago about a particularly old fashioned priest who was really set in his ways, and he was not allowing 'trousered' ladies into his church. I can't remember where it was exactly, somewhere on the mainland maybe - not in Corfu. Anyway this story made the national news in Greece - there was a real uproar about it!!
Corfu priests are nice - there aren't, to my knowledge any like him!!

Pants, not shorts, have been fine in my experience. I did hear of a woman in pants who was turned away from a monastery (not in Corfu). She was admitted after she wrapped her jacket around her lower body (with her pants still on, of course!)
Sorry UK friends, I guess we should be speaking of trousers not pants...
