I have been asked to pay a deposit for accommodation for 2009 by money transfer to a bank in Corfu but when I went to Barcays today they have quoted me a price of £45.00 just to do the transfer. I am not prepared to pay this and the owner of the accommodation is not keen on taking a credit card deposit for some reason. Has anyone else come across this ?

Yes I've come across this so I now do internet banking, you can create a new transfer then transfer money for free. I'm with the Halifax, it's easy.

it depends upon which bank you use as to what they charge.
I have an account with nationwide and they charge £20 but i dont know if thats for their customers
It is the cheapest we have come across as i have a barclays and an abbey national account also and my husband is with hsbc.
so if you have accounts with other banks or building societies-shop around

£45!!! OMG I thought the Halifax were a bit steep at £17.50!! If they wont accept a credit card try Western union, its about half the price of your bank.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately in Jersey we do not have Halifax, Nationwide etc. I will look into it further but I am hoping that the owner of the accommodation will relent and let me pay by credit card. My husband has mtransfers to banks abroad. I was prepared to pay a charge but certainly not that high.

Sorry don't know what happened there. It was supposed to say that my husband has internet banking but is not familiar with money transfers to banks abroad.

As Nigel says Western Union is a good price or even try the Post Office for a transfer to a Bank in Corfu.

I think it is the Piraeus Bank that the Post Office transfer the money to and for under £100 it is about 12.00.

They have the money within 5 minutes of you transferring it.

Just checked with my husband's account. He has internet banking with Barclays and it would cost us £30.00 to do a transfer, better but not great. Post Office in Jersey could not really offer anything sometimes we don't have thae same facilities as the UK. Western Union can be done through the Thomson travel shop for £25.00. I just feel that I am prepared to pay a 2% charge or even more for a credit card transaction but feel these charges are a bit over the top. What do you all think? I have e-mailed the hotelier in question and he is tied up with all the problems of guests stranded due to the failure of XL at the moment.

Hi Karen

Thats far too expensive, I am sure if you explain how much it will cost to transfer the deposit he may even let you pay when you arrive

Hope you get it resolved
