I want to connect my laptop to the internet using my Nokia N95 phone as a modem. The phone has three network settings dual mode,UMTS, and GSM and operator selection is automatic or manual. If I buy a Greek prepaid simcard will it be possible to connect to the internet and more importantly will it be any cheaper than using Orange. Any of you folks up on this ?

Hello nuffstrong, buy any greek sim card ifor your phone then use the credit of a sat10 card that you can buy locally from most shops. The full instructions are in english on this card.

Hope this is some help.

You will only be able to use a Greek sim if your phone is "unlocked".

I assume that the only internet connection you will get will be GSM, which will be very slow.

Well the phone unlocking industry is worth a mention here. The one I tried listed my Nokia N95 in bold print so I paid online then was told they can't unlock it and don't offer refunds only a credit. Suffice to say that after the mention of Google guidelines, Paypal, and Trading Standards I got the refund. There are loads of offers for cheap airtime but the initial unlocking of the phone is often conveniently overlooked. Thanks for the heads up folks.

Orange and Nokia charge £20 for unlocking the phone and have a 3 week waiting list and nobody wants to unlock the N95 on the net so I've paid online for an unlocking code for my old 6230i phone and intend taking that to Corfu for use as a modem unfortunately once again the code doesn't work. The support says wait till I have the Greek sim card I want to use then insert that and the code then if that doesn't work it's tough and no refund.I should say it was only £2.99 not £20. The current and only pay as you go data charge for a bundle from Orange is £42.55 for 10 mb or pay for what you use at £8 per megabyte  which has gone up apparently because they were forced to reduce their roaming charges on all contract phones. This bit is actually good news ie 38p/min outgoing 19p/min incoming voicecalls and texts are 30p each to send and free to receive but none of this applies to pay as you go phones which are still expensive.

Hiya Nuff.  Guests here were just taking their laptops to the local internet cafe and just logging them on their on there.  When are you due over and where will you be?

Yes I think that this would be the best solution in this instance. I am not even sure you would have access to mobile data networks with a pay as you go sim.

Most internet cafes in the areas that I stay will allow you to plug a laptop into their network, do you even need to take a laptop? Some of the internet cafes I have seen also have facilities such as Skype, allowing cheap phone calls via the internet.

I would try and check out the internet cafe facilities in the area you are staying before you leave.

Hi Jaybird & Acharavi thanks for your advice. I agree that the internet cafe is the best solution and that will be my first port of call every morning. However I always like a back up and sometimes my business requires emails sending with attachments such as drawings or photos immediately so wherever I go around the island the laptop goes.

If as you say Acharavi I can use my Skype phone that will be brilliant.

Jess we arrive late on 31st Jan and are staying in Karousades so we'll be calling in at your pub .
