Can anyone who lives on the island or has had any experience tell me if the new hospital at Gouvia is fully open?  If one had an emergency that might need surgery where is the BEST place to go? Where is there an A & E? Who is the best ENT consultant/surgeon?  Not trying to sound too alarmist but my son has had some problems recently which I'm 99.9% sure will be fine but 'just in case'.  (I worked on the island for several years in the 70's and knew the old Corfu hospital at that time only too well!)

Hi Elaine,

Sorry but I cannot help you as I have never had to go to the hospital on Corfu, thank goodness.

Can anyone who has recently been to Gouvia help Elaine out???

P.S. I hope your son is ok.

The new hospital being built in Gouvia, has been for quite a few years now. In 2003 it came to a halt because of financial or stuctural matters. I believe as said above the building has recommenced, but still no sign of it being finished.

I think you will still find, for anything major you would have to be taken to the General Hospital in Corfu Town. Most resorts do have surgeries and/or clinics.

Incidentally, do make sure you have an in date E111 to cover any medical charges. In date means one taken out this year.

Lets hope you do not need either.

Yammas.

Most of the more seriouse surgical situations are transferred to either Athens or Ioannina

We once travelled on an Olympic flight to Athens which was delayed so that the rear seats could be removed to accomodate a hospital type trolley, drips, monitors as well as Dr. and nurse. All screened off for privacy. All very efficiently carried out.

Okay, thanks for all your comments.  We return to Corful every few years - it's hard to forget your first love.  Anyone out there old enough to remember Corfu in the mid 1970s?

My first trip to Corfu was in the mid to late 1970s. I feel like I caught the last of an era, because in the early 80s it started to change quite rapidly. I could get quite tiresome, reminiscing about hotel-free beaches and roads empty of traffic, but will spare you all.

The hospital in Corfu town preserves the charm of older days , though I must say my husband was given good care for a minor emergency on our last visit.

Don't know anything about the new hospital. I was in hospital in Corfu 12 yrs ago, not the general hospital but in what's known locally as the Polyclinic! This was through our holiday insurance. At that time we found the conditions in the hospital horrendous compared to home but the treatment was exelllent! They literally saved  my life! You have to remember that their way of doing things is very different from here, doesn't mean it's wrong, just different!!Hope you don't need to use it though and have a wonderful holiday. P.S. I actually know a doctor(retired) who worked in the general hospital in Corfu town and thinks it's wonderful!

"Just Elaine" and "Dasia":  Yes.  Yes.  Was there in '68, '71, '73, etc.  Everything changed when the all-in-one tour operators began on Corfu.  Back in the old days, the Corfiots themselves got all the profits from tourism, and the only tourists were the ones who really took the time and effort to discover the place one-by-one.

Am glad someone else was there then!  And, no it WASN'T The Dark Ages!

Wish I was around then,to experience what you all did, unfortunately did not discover Corfu!! -  until the middle 90's - When all the children(4 of them!) decided they did not want to "holiday with us". After 4 years of going there, the children wanted to find out for themselves, why, we kept on going back to the same place!!

The result being for the last 3 years,we have gone out there as a family, ages ranging from 20 - 50!!

There is something for everyone in Corfu, whichever resort you choose to stay in,but the friendliness and hospitality you receive from the Corfiots is second to none and I can honestly say that I would not want to spend my holidays anywhere else.!!

Here's looking to the next 10 years!! - Hopefully!!

Roll on September!!  can't wait !

Yes Portia

I was there in 73 ...  and what a fab time we had.   2 weeks in a villa next the sea at Perama for £60.  Every one reading "The day of the Jackle".   Fix beer.(it was odd going into a bar and asking for a Fix)  All the Greek men wearing stack heals so they could appear as tall as the scandinavian girls at the disco`s.  No frozen food.  Loo`s that stank to high heaven.  Very persistent flys.  Flying fish and sea urchins et al ... but above all the warmth of the people.

PS Know anyone with a time machine

I don't want to be one of those people who whines on about how much better things were way back when. I'm sure that whenever one discovers Corfu, one will take away happy memories like Sue's. Corfu somehow seems to weather mass tourism better than many places. But I couldn't resist replying to Elaine about being in Corfu in the 1970s...I just had such a good time there then.

Then, as now, what I knew best is the town. Anybody remember Bouzis yoghurt shop? One of the best breakfasts ever, his yoghurt with honey.

I will stop because this probably belongs in another thread. But I hope some of us can have that discussion sometime.
