Hi littlebird,

It's about 500 metres south of San Rocco Square.  Go south from San Rocco (opposite the blue bus station towards Garitsa) down Alexandras, take the 2nd or 3rd turning to your right and it's in front of you.

Regards, Dave.

Thanks Dave,

That's another Amstel I owe you.  Or is it Metaxa?

The British Cemetery, and the area around it (and the prison), are well worth visiting.  Although only a short distance away from the hustle and bustle and mad traffic of the "whacky races" of San Rocco Square, its like stepping into another world.  So quiet, and tranquil.  Its like stepping through one of those sci-fi portals into another dimension.

Because the cemetery is wall-enclosed though, It might be better to go down Mitropoleos Methodiou off San Rocco (Perpendicular to Alexandras) and turn left at the end onto Kolokotroni which, I believe takes you past the main entrance.

As Dave says, its only about 500 meters from San Rocco.

Stephan

Hi littlebird

Hope you enjoy your visit to the cemetery. We've been there and as Stephan says, it is like you are miles away from busy Corfu town as it is so tranquil and the gardens and flowers are beautiful.

It's not totally dedicated to British people and war graves, as such, which you will discover when you visit.  There are graves for different nationalities and for people who were British and died in Corfu.

The Gentleman who tends the gardens was honoured by the Queen (of England) recently and he deserves it so much.

Jan

I know its a morbid subject, but as we are talking about cemeteries, can we, ifwe are resident here,be buried in corfu,or do we have to be repatreated in the event of our death on the island,

This is not a subject we think about, in the excitment of moving here, but it is a fact that each and every one of us must one day face.

The british cemetery in corfu town is as you state, well kept and very beautiful

Yes, we strolled through the cemetary last year, very peaceful and a credit to Corfu.

Yes you can be buried in the English Cemetary, In the spring it is one of the most beautifull places to visit, (bearing in mind that we are talking of a sad sort of place), The custodian is an acknowledged expert on wild orchids as well as other wild flowers, of which the cemetary abounds, there are also a plentifull supply of tortoises within the grounds.

There are no crematoriums in Corfu, I understand (but could be corrected) that the only crematorium in Greece is in Athens, but I dont know whereabouts.

Bob.

I didn't find it morbid at all as it is a rememberance for people who once lived and you are acknowledging their existence. But, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

hayesjamea6 - is that a picture of Bob Marley in your avatar?

Hi all.

We visited the British Cemetary in May of this year.

http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/mm/corfu_british/cemetery.htm

It's a haven of beauty and tranquillity, especially at that time of year.

Check out my avatar for a picture of George who'll proudly regale you with information on the cemtary and it's inhabitants, including the British sailors who lost there lives in the "Corfu incident" as mentioned in this months CTG newsletter, and also a certain Joseph Conners who won the VC in the crimean war.

For another picture of the cemetary in full colour, check out our reveiw of the Kontokali bay hotel on trip advisor.

On leaving the cemetary there's a comments book and collection bowl, as I believe they don't get a great deal of money for the upkeep of the cemetary, and what a wonderfull job they do.

The cemetary a morbid place?.

No way, it's a beautiful garden like area that on departure will leave you uplifted

Regards

Carl.

In rare cases it is also possible to be buried with full rites in a Greek church. I attended the funeral of a non -orthodox British expat in 2004, who was interred in this way, in a beautiful churchyard in the mountains above Acharavi. Such an honour is an extremely uncommon occurence though.

Mr Mythos.

After all the trouble that was taken to gain the permition, its a shame nobody does anything about keeping his grave tidy. Not that many graves get much attention.

We went last year, George told us that there are 28 differant species of orchids in the grounds as well as the other flowers and plants, he knew exactly where each one was and its name His a lovely man and very helpfull.

He also seemed to know where to find each tortoise. Viv
