Hi everyone - just wondering if anybody can help me. I'm thinking about buying a radio to use in Corfu so I can listen to local radio stations like island radio corfu and so I can also listen to BBC world service.

I know that Island radio is 105.1 FM. Does anyone know what wavelength and frequency the world service is? I think it used to be shortwave, but think it may have changed. Also - can I get all these stations on digital radio?

The BBC world service stopped transmission on shortwave in Feb 2008. Mostly found now on satellite or cable (DAB)
Athens international radio 104.4 FM

Thanks for your reply Toulky. I guess that means I will need to make sure I get a digital radio in order to receive BBC World Service.

Hi Toulky,

Well, news of the demise of SW to Europe has managed to pass me by - I'm really shocked. One of my intended purchases for our move (sadly postponed till next year) was an upgraded radio, so that'd been a good bit of cash wasted.

What's the FM reception like ? Currently we've not got internet/satellite connections - would it be worth getting set up in order to get radio ? Could we manage with a little dish?

Apols for all the q's - being without my fix of World Service would be like having an arm cut off.

Best regards

Jane B

Digital radio (DAB) does not exist in Greece, apart from some test transmissions a few years ago on the main land.

To receive the world service you will most likely need a satellite TV dish

Nicky M......

You will be able to get Island FM on the northern coast of Corfu, and they do relay World Service news on the hour.

You can get the World Service with quite good reception during the day aimed at the Middle East and the Gulf...

07.00 to 14.00 GMT   15575 kHz
07.00 to 14.00 GMT   11760 KhZ
14.00 to 17.00 GMT 12095 kHz
18.00 to 20.00 GMT 9485 KhZ

Also during the day, 17830, 17795 and 15400 aimed at Central Africa also come in with varying degrees at various times. The Mid East frequencies always gave better daytime reception for me compated to the European ones.... though the European late afternoon strong frequency is sadly missed.

Depending on conditions, the quality of these frequencies can vary dramatically!! My daytime sunbathing was always and will be accompanied by good news briefings through my earpiece!

A late evening option is 648 Medium Wave which can be good(direct from the UK), and also late at night, Radio 4 on 198 Long Wave(I would often listen to the midnight news at 2am local time after a night out!!!!!)

Thanks for the fantastic info !

What receiver do you have ? My Roberts R9962 is quite small and not all that high powered. My budget is about 125GBP - what would you advise ?

We don't bother with a radio as you can listen to all the bbc radio channels including world service on the internet on the bbc's website. Just get a decent pair of speakers.

Ron B....

I have a Sony ICF-SW 7600G....Had it for ten years...
fairly compact and digital. Has an extension wire aerial on it, and does the business. Digital read-out and pre-sets on it...useful for switching around the frequencies quickly!! Cost £180 back then. Sure newer models are cheaper these days!!

Thanks Alex,

I have to do a search and see what I can find. Have been surfing since I posted earlier and have been looking a Eton models as well (YB550 is a good candidate).

Also, worldspace satellite radio looks interesting once they've finished upgrading their European service next year, esp as it appears that you can use the receiver as a wireless modem to access the internet without needing a dish. The subscription is $99 per year at the moment.

Graham - not arranged the internet yet, think that there might be a problem with the size of dish needed in Sinarades to get anything. Also connecting wiring up the entire house might be a tad expensive !

Regards

I think you are confusing the internet and satellite.

Satellite requires a dish, internet requires a phone line.

Thanks for all the great information. Unfortunatley, my place is in Central Corfu so I may not be able to get Island radio. Will give it a try though.

Please excuse my ignorance - but the frequencies you've listed for the Middle East and the Gulf - are they shortwave?

Hi Nicky...

Yeh...you would not get Island Radio there sadly, but give it a go...you never know. I think the Greek Religious station will come roaring in on that frequency.
Yes...those World Service Mid East and Gulf frequencies are shortwave. You should be able to get something at some times of the day.
