I always have booked independantly - Flights- Cars- Apartments, everything and its been great
But looking at the prices for 2009 independant travel is now going to be much more expensive. I did a price comparison with me booking my own apartment and flights etc - for just two weeks and it was £900 more expensive that with Thomas Cook.
I accept that the apartments with Thomas Cook may not be in the exact location I want, but £900 difference makes you think a little. For that £900 I could go for another week in May

Steven for 2009 I have found the prices with the Tour Operators much more expensive as a package than independent.

ie looking for 1 week beginning next June and for 2 of us flights and apartment for less than £450.00 looked at TC and they want £630.00 and Cosmos would like the pricely sum of £840.00!!!!!!!!! 1 week 2 people.

On checking Cosmos's site they have the cheek to charge under occupancy for a studio for 2-3 even though the 3rd bed is a chair bed suitable for a child under 12!!!!!!!!
an absolute rip off!!!

Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

I may check again if that's the case
I was looking with Monarch and Thompson on Flights in August and for 3 of us it was around £1100 with taxes Etc,
My apartments at the oceanis are 125 Euros a night- a bit steep maybe but the location is superb.

If I can get 2 Holidays next year than so much the better. Hence the prudent approach to costing it all out

When I was watching TO prices about a month ago, they were going up and the cost of a holiday to Kos went up £200 (family of 4, August 2009) over the course of a fortnight. I think you will find (and I am hoping) that flight prices will come down after Xmas. This year in January I booked 4 flights for August 08 with Monarch and paid £1076. I am hoping this year for Easy Jet and to do them cheaper than this. Currently they are around £1330 flythomascook, which is cheaper than last week, when they were coming in at £1500 with Monarch. It's a gamble, I know. We have now shelved Kos and have booked direct to go to Corfu. Particularly because we knew which accommodation we wanted to go to and we loved Corfu so much this year when we went.

I know this is a Corfu sight but to confirm your statement we've just booked 7 nights B & B in a lovely Hotel in Kos Town for next September. Extra baggage, in flight meals, sitting together etc etc for £772 all in. This will be our 3rd September on Kos and the weather's still OK. My Son flew home on the 8th and apart from one storm they had 26°+ every day. We were on Skiathos the previous week and had 5.1/2 days of cold and rain. It actually rained for 12 days solid in total so the poor folks we spoke to who were there for 14 nights were really racked off.

I have been checking out Travel republic site and the flights are coming up for 2 of us in June £350.00 apartments at £104.00 for the week, I don't doubt though these prices will fluctuate the more they are booked.

Just couldn't believe the audacity of Cosmos charging under occupancy!!!!! just shows doesn't it......

Keep your eyes open Stephen - you never know !!!!!!

Good luck

Sadly it's not just the flight and accomodation prices that we now have to consider, but the Euro is much stronger too! I believe prices are going to fall dramatically before the start of 2009 - the Euro is already weakening against the UK£ and fuel costs are reducing, so we might be able to afford it again next year.

Hi all

I don't know if it is of any interest to anybody but I have just looked at 2 weeks, next June with Portland Direct at the Teresa Apartments and they are are wanting £360.00 per person from Gatwick. Obviously the Insurance is to be added but that seems pretty good to me considering that includes Flight, Apartment and Coach to and from the Airport.

It is £520.00 for the same holiday in August.

Good deal or not?

It may be because you have used the expletive s*ds Davey Boy which some people on here occasionally find words like this unsavoury.... or it could be that Steven O is not referring to independant travel if he can only find this method at £900 more than package prices.... only a guess

Regarding the weather it is still lovely here in Corfu, however wherever you go on holiday you may be unlucky to get some poor weather what evertime during the season, after all it has to rain sometimes!!!!! I have been here many times in May but once the whole week was FREEZING however this year it was wonderful. Its pot luck really at the beginning and end of the season.

We pretty much always book independantly, but after XL went bust we were left with a situation of not being able to take up the accommodations, car hire and taxi transfers we had pre booked....none of them are covered by any insurance as they have kept their end of the deal - not their fault we could no longer make it out to the island.

We were very lucky, and have basically been able to "transfer" all the bookings to May 2009.

We do however have trips out to Spain and Portugal booked before then...both are using budget airlines and independently booked accommodation. If the airline goes bust and we can't get alternatives, we will still have to pay for the apartments. We'll be considerably out of pocket, with no holiday to show for it.

Just something to bear in mind in the current financial climate.

Trace.........good ole Corfu agreeing to transfer car hire taxi etc. You wouldn't get that in many places including UK where you would have lost money as they charged a cancellation fee.

This post sort of ties in with the thread on 'the beach' about signing a petition to stop people losing their money with airline companies if they go bust. It occurs to me that it's all very well to ask the government to ensure holidaymakers are covered if the airline goes bust, but as Trace says - if you book the accommodation independently you may well lose all the money for this if you cant get there. You cant make the government legislate to cover a private holiday booking abroad.
