We just got back from 2 great weeks on the best island in the world!!! Thanks to Monarch and Tesco vouchers for doing the honours. Only 3 and a half days of cloud (and a "Spectaclar" thunderstorm) out of 14 so I'm happy about that for Sept into Oct.
Just a point, we visited Lake Korisson on saturday arriving from the Agios Matheos end and Melitiei. My wife and I had a Nescafe each from the nice lady clearing up after the storm and the place filled quickly. Friendly cat also. 2 coffees and a small bottle of water, 2 glasses came to 7 euros. We couldn't believe it. We paid 9 euros in Venice a couple of months ago and whilst the settings are both waterside, there is no comparison. Later that day in Corfu town we had a latte and a frappe at the Liston. Only came to 6.10 euros.

Hi Doug, you should have stopped off in Agios Matheos and had a Nescafe with the locals, in Sept. we paid 3 euros and the 2 glasses of water free. I know you have not the sea view, but the locals are brill. nice area tho Doug isnt it. lorac.

Two coffees with free water at Old Perithia was 3 euros, one place in corfu town 4 euros, elsewhere 4 to 6 - and that was regardless of wherther we had nescafe, or filter coffee

Well, I'll drink (almost) anything and esp. coffee. Not one found one I don't like yet. I prefer a black coffee generally and I like my kafe ellinikos sketo, the same as my ouzo and my metaxa.

I have to say, in some places they are gettin the price of coffee totally out of proportion. I went to the beach one day in Agios Giorogs , and at a bar close by from a pool bar, they wanted 3 euros for a takeaway nescafe in a plastic cup ! .....and then they moan because the torists aren't spending money !!! You might expect to pay that in the liston or in London, but in Pagi I think you are pushing it !

In oxford we can pay nearly £3.00 for a cup of coffee, so it's not just London, but my choice is not to buy it.
While no body likes being ripped off, as tourists we have to remember that the Bars and Restaurants are only open for 6 months of the year, and what they make in that 6 months has to take them through the winter months till the season starts again.
So shop around for your coffee and only pay what your happy with, but just remember "could you make 6 months money take you through 12 months"

I suppose the real point of this discussion and others along the same lines, is not the actual price of the commodity, but the shocking realisation that 3 euros is £3 now instead of something conciderably less. And as occasional tourists we are becomeing more aware of what things are costing.
At the start of the season I took one of our elderly neighbour out in our boat for the day from San Stephanos to Kerasia where we had lunch (the family that own the taverna have a connection to the people in our village which I have'nt quite worked out yet), He insisted on catching the bill, which was not the idea of the trip, and commented "Not much money, not much money", and the same comment after a stop at the Ice Cream Palour at Perithia, where I've always felt that it seems expencive.

I wonder what we will be expected to pay this year for something as simple as a coffee?
I would take the view that if it is good value I would get more people in, people will always stop where there are other customers already.

Although I do not have a crystal ball, I honestly can't see prices for things such as coffee rising by much, if anything at all.
Yes there will always be places that charge over the top prices for a cuppa, and I suppose there will be a few that will play on the fact that prices here have gone up, and also those who take advantage of a picturesque setting etc. but I think the majority of businesses here in Corfu will absorb the price increases as much as possible to give the best value possible in the difficult circumstances, even if it means the profit margin isn't as large as it has been on previous years. Lets face it, a small profit is better than none at all!!

We live in an island in Greece (not Corfu) and here you can pay anything from 3 euros to 6 euros for 2 Nescafe. A bit annoying when you can buy a tin of Nescafe for less than 6 euros, so you know what a profit they are making. We have cut down on stopping off and having a Nescafe, sit on the terrace at home with one now, unless we are meeting people. If everyone does this then the tavernas will not be taking any more money this year than last.
