I dont like the commercial aspects of life. My Doctor (Ive just been diagnosed with a stomach ulcer) said to me "No Hurry, No Worry and No curry" and I can handle all that in Corfu. Corfu is not commercial at all. Its built up areas like maybe Sidari are not OTT- infact they are pleasant. People who think Corfu is commercial are Crazy. Its just right

Some visitors use the word commercial, when in some cases they perhaps mean "Anglified"....ie. English breakfasts, John Smiths, karaoke etc and perhaps not as much Greek as they'd remembered many years ago.
Sadly, that seems to happen just about everywhere to a certain extent.

I have a house in the south of Corfu and can say that the area is not commercialised apart from Kavos and St George. Everyone who has stayed in our house says how uncommercialised and really Greek the place is. I think that it may be the case that you 'always get one' and you just got that one.

Hi Buxworth,
Do you rent your home out to other people or just friends, do you have a link to booking, prices etc.We are spending our last week out of 3 in the south next summer.

I think it's all pretty relative really and one mans meat is anothers poison. Corfu has become more commercialised of course, as Buxworth said above St. George is now counted as commercialised, I remember camping on the beach many years ago with just the company of a distant one or two tavernas.
Again as said by Trace, Anglisised, yes, Corfu remember has long had British links and was absolutely first resort Island to cater for the new package tourism craze of several decades ago.
You can still find the essential Greek way of life on Corfu away from the other stuff, you can find it much easier in other areas of Greece, but I think a lot of people like the mix of commercial/less commercial found on Corfu.......

hi
I agree it is relative, have been going to sidari, on and off for 12 years,.....yes things have changed....more appts in thr canal'd'more, people outside some of the restaurants trying to entice you in, but the deep rooted feel of the place is the same the people are the same people and i can still find without any great difficulty that sidari i found 12 years ago and hope to keep finding for many years to come.

The dillema is that in trying renting our villa, we have to tell people how wonderful it is in the south of Corfu. While and same time we don't want too many people to know because if becomes popular then it will lose the very charm and originallity that visitors love.

Buxworth .... last year i put a thread on about someone i worked with not realising that after corfu town there is life ... A few people responded that they had never been south and would visit next time ..... some did and guess what... they were impressed so while part of me says keep it to the likes of me and you but part of me says let everyone see what we do ....

Believe me, I have travelled to most of the main Greek Islands and several parts of the mainland and there is more 'Greece' in Corfu than anywhere else.

I agree - this year I have been to Crete and Kefalonia and while Kefalonia is in no way commercialised as a whole, there are still pockets and Argostoli I did not like! Crete is beautiful for scenery, but the larger towns are very commercialised. Roll on 2009 and back to beloved Corfu, which for me has the true essence....
