Having read and seen on this site some pictures of Rick Stein filming in Corfu for his next series I was wondering when it was to be shown. Some research tells me it is a series devoted to Mediterranian cooking but I couldn't find anything which tells me when it might be scheduled. Also I believe he filmed at a taverna in Perithia, is this correct? what is the name? and is it easy to get to by Taxi from Kalami?.

The series is actually going to be shown some time in September this year. Not sure exactly where they were filming but I think you might see something of Agni bay during the programme.

Rick Stein filmed in O Forus in Old Perithia. This is a fantastic Taverna serving authentic greek food using fresh local produce and all at very reasonable prices. The owner Thomas is a wonderful man who genuinely cares about the food and service in his Taverna....Vassos, his wife, is an inspirational cook. The food is simple but delicious..old Perithia and, in particular, O Forus is well worth a visit and I recommend everyone to try this taverna and find out for themselves.

Chris,
Thanks for that. Very helpful. I've got a Corfu map in front of me. I'm staying at Barbati in October, and it looks fairly straightforward from there though uphill, I assume. I could not make Mt Pankorater last visit, and plan to correct that this time.
So if I get to Perithia as well it will kill two birds with one stone!

David,
go the road from Kassiopi direction Acharavi. Short time BEFORE branch to St. Spiridon Lake to the right there is the road to Loutses to the left. Follow this road, pass Loutses, follow the road further and after a long time (thought often we have overlooked it) then comes the branch to Old Perithia. Its still a few kilometers then.
O Foros Taverna is fantastic. The owner Thomas is always so friendly and talking with the guests. You will have an unforgetable fantastic meal if you do not order something from the card but ask him to bring what he recommends.
Regards, Rita

SCRIPT>Hi Ya David....Make it your first stop....From Barbaty...You can get ware you you wont to go by heading to Spartylas..Rather than going Kira's(Rita) way....And take in Mt Pandokratoras first...From Spartylas head on out as you are heading Sgourades....But way be for you get there there is a turning to the right that will take you to Strinylas(You can stop and have a coffee just hare nice little village with tavern under the big tree opposite the bus stop and gift shop toilet behind tavern) from there on just keep heading right as you will see Mt Pandokratoras looming up at you...(You can drive all the way to the top) by the track then it turns in to a nice concrete road....After you have vistaed Mt Pandokratoras go back a little of the way you came about a haft mile or so and you will a turning to your right now follow that road all the way keeping left until you come to a very sharp left hand turn that that will take you all the way up to old Perithia..And if you can remember the way you came in the first place take the same road all the way back again....And if you get lost all the better great fun finding your way back....lol...
Sorry Rita the away you are sending dave will add an extra 30 miles to come all the way back from loutses back to Barbaty along the coast road again.....But your way is a prity way and very scinic all the same....

We stopped at Foros Taverna in Old Perithea last week for a snack. If you go, you must try the home made ice creams - my family raved about them for the rest of the holiday!!!

Rita and Chris,
I couldn't give directions as detailed as yours for the area I live in, let alone Corfu! So I'm hugely impressed and deeply appreciative. Chris gives the 'direct' route, but the area I did not get to last time was the northern part of the island so I might end up doing a combination of both.
I'm going to print this page off to save the directions.
Thanks indeed.
David
PS. Rita - your photo of Glyfada sundown is stunning.

Hi David and Chris,
Last October we had a walk from Spartilas to Old Perithia by foot. We went up the village and then around Mount Pantokrator to the left. We were going donkey paths and stony ways, meeting only some goats and found the skelleton of something bigger, perhaps a cow or donkey. During the first time of the walk we saw the top of Pantokrator (did not go up this time) and after we surrounded the mountain then could look down to Old Perithia. It was so phantastic view, but really a bit difficult, you need walking boots for that. Walking time: I think, was around seven hours. Its approximately 15 kms, but we did not run, but enjoy the walk. Do you know the school house in Old Peritihia? It is the one with the steps aside which is a bit away from the other houses. I love it. Does anybody know the price? -lol-
Chris, until now we were unable to find the way you describe. Corfu maps are especially in this region not really authentic. In Dafni we were unable to go on....
So we take then the road via Loutses, even though coming from Glyfada. How far is it???? First to Town, all along the coast, then up.... check it next time.
If you go my Loutses way, you can also visit upper cave (see photo in my gallery). It is from the football place after you have passed Loutses a wonderful walk of approximately one hour. Such a beautiful view to Albania.
David, the Glyfada photo is the view from my apartment. I can t get enough from sitting outside, having some wine and that special view!
Regards, Rita (stop dreaming, Rita!!!!!!)

..Hi ya Kira..Dave is down in Barbaty and no dowt will be in a car (And not walking like your self)So he is nearer to Spartilas and that way to go to Mt Patokrateor and then on to old Perithia....
Did you say you walk it from Spartilas...How did you get to spartilas in the first place the hill up to spartilas is bad enough from the main coast road alone....
Kira what ill try and do is take a pichure of the map and then down size it and put in on the site for you....Or if you send me your adreess ill send it to you....
The way you are on about Dave would have to drive all the way past kassiopi and take the turning for Loutses to get to old perithia....then on to Mt Panokrateor...well either way he goes its still a nice run out....
P.S if you go to my pichures of Corfu the second pichure that you will see is the vieu looking down from Mt Panokrateor.... A lot of people think that what they are looking down on is old Parithia...but it is not but well worth takeing a look but go in a 4x4 if you do as the track is some what bumpey....Chris

Rita and Chris,
No, I won't be walking!!
I will be driving something fairly substantial though.
I like to 'wander' a bit, and like Chris said in a post I don't really mind if I end up somewhere different to what I planned.
I will get to Perithia - one way or the other! After all the help I've had it would be churlish not to.
David
PS: I shall be getting Mapman's Map before I go.

I went to old Perithia a few weeks ago. To be honest I only went there because of some recommendation on this site maybe 6 months ago. I also went to the Wonderful Nikolas Taverana and Agni Taverna because of similar recommendations- both in Agni Bay.
Old Perithia was an Old relic of a place, with perhaps 3 places open amongst the Ruins. I found it easy enough to reach, through a seroes of Winding roads. It would be "Unfortunate" if somebody chose to develop such a place. It is Just fine the way it is?

Stephen,
As you will see I'm planning to go there so I'm pleased to see you thought it worthwhile.
Also, it was much featured in the Rick Stein programme (Thursday) which clearly showed those roads. They did look newly tarmaced though?
Your thoughts on Old Perithia were very much echoed by the taverna owner when he was interviewed!!

Dave, I don't know whereabouts your staying in Barbati but if you drive up the hill/entrance as if going to Pantokrator Hotel then turn lefthalfway up past the Supermarket there is a good road which winds right up through the woods bringing you out just below Spartilas. The locals use it to avoid traffic on the main road. It's a little narrow in places but that applies to most of Corfu.

Be very careful as you park up at old perithan...To be on the safe side park near the bell tower and walk down...The concrete road that ends as a very Nasty drop off to one side and the possibility of grounding the car....That is as you are comeing to the first tavern that is on the left of you...Chris

We were really looking forward to watching the corfu program, remembered it was on at the last minute, quickly set the DVD to record it but of course something went wrong and we didn't get the right program!
Does anyone know if they are repeating it? I have tried the BBC website but couldn't find any info on there.

You can Go to Corfu cant you Keira. I cant put my finger on why I love it all, apart from saying that I become the person I really want to be when im in Corfu, and not the irritable, bad tempered, everything done Now Zealot that my life is here

As a veggie, I'd never even bothered looking at a pitta gyros, so when I saw the programme, I was intrigued to see that they actually don't look like the pitta bread we know, but that they are more like wraps, in fact very like a tortilla wrap to look at? I'd like to make some using my own veggie fillings but want to know if I can buy that type of pitta while out in Kalami?
