Thanks frantoniamama. Would like to be able to compare with UK prices to see if it would be cheaper to freight them out.

Power tools are very expensive compared to UK. I am taking several thing with us this tome including power drills and angle grinders. These are all available in Greece but are quite expensive. Paont brushes and paint, very cheap, every hardware shop on the island.

Graham, that suprises me. I thought tools here were very reasonable. I haven't been to the UK for many years, so it is difficult for me to compare though.

The 'Profi' technical DIY market (on the main Paleo Road coming out of town)offers an excellent  range and price. The only concern I would have about bringing anything from the UK, is if you have a problem with it, you are unlikely to be able to take it back!

Hi Nathan (peace be upon you)

Yes I'm afraid you're a little out of touch from being away so long, likewise I am out of touch with Greek prices after being away so long.

Prices in Greece have dropped over the years, but prices in UK have dropped more so. Many tools in UK are almost at the use and throw away if go wrong prices. An example - I recently bought a 'non brand name' SDS plus drill for less than £40.00, try getting one for less than £200 in Greece. My belt sander, percussion drill, orbital sander, jig saw cost £10,£18, £10 and £15 respectively. OK there not top notch, I use them as site back ups but they work reasonably well and each is covered by a no quibble one year guarantee.

I shall therefore be bringing my own tools across with me in a month or so.

Hi Graham T-A, Thanks for sorting my power tool question out, why it became two questions is a mystery, it looks like Profi will bethe place to go.

Thanks to everyone for their help too.

Baywatcher,

You should also sound out your local hardware stores for power tools, they all vary, for instance I was looking for an electrical nailer, just a small one capable of piercing hardboard and softwood battons, as the one we brought from UK had given up the ghost after only 1/2 an hours use. We tried a number of outlets, including Profi, and the cheapest/most powerfull/for the money, was just outside Roda. And it is still in regular use.

But since then, the same shop has'nt had what I want, or if they have it has been expensive compared with elswhere.

In a nut shell, it pays to do the rounds, item by item.

Insidentally, it is impossible to compare prices with UK prices for power tools,  the cheap as chips models available in the sheds, (Homebase-B&Q- Focus- Wicks-what have you) are manufactured to a price, and do not compare to the quality on sale in Corfu. For instance the Black and Decker range on sale in Profi is "The Professional Range" only available to the trade in the UK. And they are about the same price as UK prices.

It depends on what you expect from a tool, if you are likely to want to reduce a bedrock stone in size, or perhaps create a hole in the 32" thick wall to cater for a new window, even with modest inroads, you will need a profeshional tool, not a "Shed Special at 1/8th of the price" On the other hand, if you are antisipating drilling a number of screw holes in your old stone walls, a cheapo will do.

As somebody said earlier, when it breaks, throw it away.

And I have been ferrying tools out to Corfu for years, but now I find the local equivalent comparable, like for like.

Bob.
