Just arrived back from Corfu on 4 September - thought I'd give you lot an up to date price check.

Petrol - only checked from Corfu Town out on the Pelekas/Paleo road - unleaded 95 octane and diesel both the same price - €1.04 per litre (that's £3.20 per gallon - bargain!)

Cigs - anything from €16 (about £11) for 200 Next or Leader up to €28 (about £19) for B&H, Embassy, Regal, Marlboro etc.

Hope it helps - but a small question. Someone told me last week that it was legal to bring back 16,000 cigs to the UK from Corfu because you've paid Greek tax on them - is that right or am I being led up the garden path?

I was at Manchester airport today (Tuesday 5th sept) and there are HUGE Customs signs everywhere saying that the ammount of ciggies you can bring from any EU country, for your personal use and as gifts for friends and families, is unlimited!

Last year, came back from Chranie with enough ciggies for a year (still got some) and no problems.

Hope this helps

Found out that it's not the garden path ... this is from the UK HMRC website:

What goods can I bring back from the EU?

Goods obtained in the EU will already include VAT and duty applicable to the country where the goods were obtained. No additional VAT or Customs duty will be payable on entry into the UK. There is no limit to the amount of excise goods (such as tobacco or alcohol) you can bring into the UK (except from certain member states), provided these are carried by you and are for your own use - which includes gifts. If you bring in goods for resale, or for any payment, even payment in kind, they are regarded as being for a commercial purpose.

If you bring back large quantities of alcohol or tobacco, a customs officer may ask you about the purposes for which you hold the goods. This particularly applies if you have with you more than the following amounts:

  • 3200 cigarettes
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 200 cigars
  • 3kg smoking tobacco
  • 10 litres of spirits
  • 20 litres of fortified wine
  • 90 litres of wine
  • 110 litres of beer.

The officer will take into account all the factors of the situation and your explanation. If you are unable or you refuse to provide a satisfactory explanation the Officer may well conclude that those goods are for commercial purposes and not for your own use.

If the officer is satisfied the goods are being brought into the UK for a commercial purpose, and are not for own use, the goods, along with any vehicle used to transport them, will be liable to seizure and may not be returned.

Hi

The quantities listed in daveandaleks posting above are, as suggested, for guidence only. They do not have the force of law. However, the emphasis is on you, the traveller to prove that the goods you are carrying are for your own personal consumption.

Exactly as Martyn says; for years the UK customs tried to make it seem it was illegal to bring back more than 800 from the EU, but due to people threatening to or actually taking them to court they then extended the GUIDELINES to present amount. If you've got the bottle to do it you can bring back as many as you like for your own use and as gifts but be prepared for increasing governmenty hassle as you go further over the GUIDELINES.

Yes, and Customs are not unknown to be "flexible" with the application of the law. I had one client whose van was seized after he had left Dover. He was pulled over by the police on the suspicion that his van was overweight - it was. But then Customs turned up and seized the vehicle and it's contents.

We eventually got it back by arguing that they did not have "just cause" having allowed the van to pass through the port.

I think XL or Monarch airlines may have something to say about one of their 757s being siezed by British customs!!!!
