Dear All,

I returned home today 8th June 04. This is my advise.

Ensure you have enough money for any unpleasant surprises on you last day.  We booked a trip to Aqualand from a local travel company in Sidari's main town.  We enjoyed the day in the park until it was time to go.  We had been told to be at the pick up point for return journey at 18.00.  We arrived at 18.02 seeing the coach leaving infront of our very eyes.  We couldn't believe it.  Neither could the Corfuian man who works at Aqualand and witnessed the time of our arrival at the pick up point, and our bus leaving.  He said the drivers normally wait at least 10 or 15 minutes as well as check that all their customers are onboard.  We had no option but to get a taxi costing 45 euros and was unable to get a refund.  My husband is a diabetic.  We had hardly any money left as this was our last day. I would strongly recommend that you use the English tour companies to book excursions.  They may cost slightly more - but they would never leave you stranded and broke for 2 minutes of their time.   Apart from the above we had a lovely time.

Sorry for sounding pedantic but you were 2 minutes late!...If your check-in time at the airport was 18.00 would you leave it that late before you set off that you could arrive 2 minutes after it closed?...Hope your husband was ok though.

Hi Jo

I'm sorry to hear your last day was spoilt having had an otherwise enjoyable holiday, but I'm afraid tour operators can be just as bad. I have heard a few instances where people have been left behind. We always aim to be at the pickup point atleast 10 minutes before departure just to be on the safe side. We can all get a little dilatory towards the end of our holidays as we have become so laid back while out there.

Focus on your good memories of the holiday and look forward to the next one.

LOL

 Oh dear. So sorry to hear about that.

My husband and daughter had a slightly different experience when they went to Aqualand for the day (me, being the sensible one, stayed behind at the Villa, found a  lovely shady tree and a big book and stayed there!!). Their rep actually 'lost' the coach coming back; the driver had moved it after dropping them all off in the morning and it was half an hour before they found it again!!

Talking of coach tours though, good things can come out of disasters ;

"Sometimes an ill wind" as they say...

3 years ago, we decided to do a 'Corfu by Night ' coach tour which we booked through an agency in Kalami. It was the last night of our hols. Holding our tickets in our hot, sweaty little hands, we waited on the main road above Kalami for the tour bus, along with another family who were holding different coloured tickets, presumably because they'd booked through someone else. The bus duly arrived. The driver took one look at us all (by all, I mean  6 of us, 3 of us and 3 of them) and  declared that there wasn't enough room on the coach for everyone.He asked to see all our tickets, decided he'd take the other family  on board and left us 3 standing there without a word of apology. The English rep with him wouldn't do a thing about it, despite the fact that we all had valid tickets, explaining lamely that there'd obviously been some overbooking.

Disappointed and somewhat upset (!) I went to said travel Agency and demanded a refund, which I got. Now left with nothing to do on our last night, I rang a local Taverna in Agni Bay, just round the corner.We'd often wondered where all these people were going to from the jetty in Kalami  every evening, so we though we'd find out. Unfortunately though, when I rang, the taverna owner, Nathan, said he was fully booked. When I explained what had happened , he  very kindly squeezed an extra table in for us.We had a lovely evening and the rest, as they say,is history!

I agree with Caroline. Every excursion we went on, whether it was by the holiday rep, or through a local travel shop. We handed in, or showed our tickets, our names ticked on the boards on embarkation. We were given a time of return departure, and then a head count was done, if there were passengers missing, the reps went off to chase them up.

At the airport, you still have two hours after check in time, and there is more justifiable reasons why an aircraft cannot wait. But then again they do, but miss their slot. Also passengers who are late do have enough calls put out to get them to the departure gates.

Best Wishes.

I know this is harsh. but you were late.  I know that everything in Greece works o GMT (Greek Maybee Time) - but, being GMT, it's unreliable! It would seem that you kept the rest of your tour waiting.  It's just bad manners on your part, so from my point of view (as on occasional UK charter Skipper) any grief that you suffered is your own responsibility.

At the end of the day one must take responsibility one's own actions.  Who's watch is right? etc.  You must allow for all sorts of eventualities - you are in a strange country - don't expect everything to run to a specific time schedule (even if it's published)!!

Play evrything by ear and talk to your guides - it will help yu ooo understand an entirely different culture!

(If I was being political (which i'm not!) this is why the Federalist plans for the EU won't work!.

Got to agree with a few replies, if your late its your own fault, if the coach was due to leave at 6.00 I would be there at 5.45 just to be safe.

How many times have you been stuck on a coach waiting for the stragglers?

I know I have on a few occasions, hoping the driver would set off and serve em right for holding up 50 other people.

As the old saying goes; you'll know better for next time LOL

Hi Jo

Also like to say thanks for letting us know. I hope it didn't put you off the wonderful Sidari as it could happen anywhere.I personally love to book with the locals firstly it is usually cheaper and secondly they have so much character, they normaly take you on little detours at every opportunity stopping at as many relations as possible that own a gift shop or coffee bar.But I was planning to go to aqualand on my visit this year(only 24 days to go )so I will make sure I get to the coach on time.

Jo, I have the owners of Aqualand here at the taverna enjoying a meal. They are saddened to hear of your problems at Aqualand. They say that if the coach arrived at the park with 60 people, it would not leave until all were accounted for. It seems that in your case there was either an oversight, or a party had got on the wrong bus taking your place.

If you visit Corfu again, contact me and they will gladly give you free tickets for another visit to the park. A generous offer I feel.

Nathan

Remember last year in Holland when we had to wait for 2 women who rolled up late during an excursion which meant the whole schedule was put out. Some of the people on the bus had a go at them and they got quite indignant "someone has to be last one said" I'll always remember an old chap's reply "Yes someone has to be last but no one has to be late". Agree 2 minutes is a bit excessive but where do you draw the line,2 mins,10 mins,20 mins. you certainly wouldn't turn up 2 minutes after a train's departure time and expect to catch it. <SCRIPT language=javascript>postamble();

Hi all

I agree Nathan, a very generous offer from the owners of Aqualand, especially as Jo's problem was nothing to do with them.  Excellent customer relations.

we really wanted to visit aqualand as our son loves water or use to !!!!! but unforntunatly we cant as thomas ( my son ) has been really poorly from birth with very bad ear infections, in september 2003 he went into hospital after three yrs of constant ear infections and had gromits fiitted we was hoping they would have come out by now because if they are still in the ear he cant go under water or have water poured over him he cant go in the sea either, thomas is gutted and so are we as we had booked a hotel beach front location with a kids pool and he cant do much as they are still in place. oh well at least he is well now apart from needing his tonsils out . hes had it rough .  well maybe next time we go fingers crossed.

Hi i was on the bus at the aqua land park on that day i was also told to be on the bus at 18.00  i was on the bus for at least ten minutes early to make sure i did not miss the bus.We waited until 18.10 in the very hot bus for a couple that was late, alot of people were angry as it was warm the bus driver did wait and he kept looking back as he was driving away and the couple was not there,everybody was on the bus for at least 17.50 for the bus ride home.I think its only fair the driver did say 18.00 you should at least been there 5 mins before.Otherwise was a good day at the park though wasnt it.

Whoever was guiding that bus made a mistake.  As a rep you must wait an acceptable time after the pick-up time and then get other guests to sign the manifest stating what time you left.  This is no different to a transfer to the airport.  Unfortunately so many British folk will arrive for the coach 25 minslate and swear that they were on time.  They then give the rep a good hiding at the airport.  A switched on rep will wave the signed manifest in front of their face and peace prevailes !  Been there, seen it, tee-shirt and scars !!!
