Hi folks.

I've had two separate weeks in Corfu this summer (came from 8 days ago from the last one) and I was just wondering, what tips do people find work best when trying to cope with Corfu withdrawal symptoms?!

Apart from having nagged my husband to agree dates to book asap for next year's return, and having stocked up on Fage yoghurts, eating horiatiki most days, I've got the Ouzo bottle to look at and some nice Aghios Gordios pictures stuck up round the house, and looking in on here regularly, what else can I do?!

Thanks in advance chaps:)

I would say the same going on this site is the best medicine. I don't think there is anything to help cure. I have been back a month and i still have the bug wishing I was still there.

I cope by booking flights and accommodation as soon as I get back home, and the dates are put into the diary!! I then book a quick November break elsewhere(this time Italy) and that passes by the time for a week! 10 months to go and counting!!

Hi Pam,

I am sorry to say that your doctor is unable to offer a remedy on the NHS for "Severe Corfu withdrawl symptons." You are the only one who can help yourself.

My suggestion is to visit the CTG site on a daily basis. If you have in interest in Agios Gordios put posts on that forum. All CTG members trawl the forums to get and give information during the "Closed Season". Also visit the photo gallery, download photos. rotate them in your kitchen to give your other half a gentle HINT.

Yammas,  Colin.

Having just had our first corfu holiday at the beginning of july and  booking up again for next year (back in nissaki). I find that looking at holiday photos depressing and have realised that I am going to have to live with this dark cloud  hovering over me until we go back. Ho Hum.

Hi Pam

I suggest you do what I have done (if you haven't already!!) - if you took any pics with a digital camera - stick them on your desk top as a background and you will have a constant reminder.  If you haven't any, pm me with your e mail addy, and 'll willingly send you a few!

All of the above! Corfu pictures around my office, as my screensaver and dipping into this site on a regular basis to make sure you keep in touch with other addicts. I also play Greek music, have the date of my next break firmly in my diary and Kleftico for Sunday lunch. Would have to say however that none of the above will really help-we miss Corfu, we miss our Greek friends and if we could we would be there full time. If you find a solution PLEASE let me know!

Having only been back 1 month from our first family trip abroad to Agni Corfu, our wonderful memories are still fresh in our minds. Still enjoying looking at our photos and video's, checking on this site regularly, watching the agni webcam ( untill it stopped ) and of course re-booking immediately on our return for next year, only 332 days to go!!!!

Being a gardener would love to visit in May as I have read that the wild flowers are beautiful, but the kids enjoyed the swimming so guess May will have to wait till they no longer want to holiday with their olds.

I am sure that the cold and wet British weather will soon take effect and 'Mythos' withdrawall symptoms will set in but the lovely memories of Corfu and the help of this site will hopefully see us all through till next October.

KeepSmiling

Thanks for all the replies guys.  It definitely does help knowing there are other addicts out there.  I've been to a fair few countries around the world, and although I love Australia too (lived there for a year), there's just something magical about Corfu.  I think a part of it is also a little bit of envy of the (seemingly) easier Greek lifestyle.  I'm sure I idealise it too much though (sunshine, beautiful beaches, family close by, nice size island to get around, hospitality etc.).  My PC was wallpapered with the Agios Gordios bay the day I got back.  My two girls are forced to eat moussaka and baklava whether they like it or not(!), I've been trying to eke out my cans of Nescafe Black Ice (coffee with cocoa) which they don't sell in the UK, and the Lila Pause choccie bars (ditto).  I have become totally obsessed with Corfu and it's really got to me.  Also, if you turn a map of Corfu on its side, it's a very similar shape to Cornwall!!  And, and, the rock in the sea at Ag. Gordios is very similar (someone mentioned it looks like Thunderbirds' Tracey Island) to the ones at Perranporth beach (which was gloriously warm with blue skies today), so there are reminders everywhere.  I'm going to Canada next May but am slightly miffed (how ungrateful am I?!) that this only delays when my next Corfu trip will be!!!  I (only partly) jest:))

I take my Greek phrase book everywhere with me to try and swot up some useful phrases for next year (I learnt my 1-10 numbers in August!) and have e-mailed a newly started Greek school in Cornwall (the first!), awaiting news of lessons.  It will now be my life's ambition to have a home there (helped by the fact that my m-in-law's friend lives in Arillas).

Thank you chaps for your various tips, most kind.  Now where did I put that Ouzo nightcap .....

Pam

First of all book the next trip so date can be put on the CTC site for 'countdown', play Greek music, have a bottle of Metaxa at the ready for "extreme homesick for Corfu" nights. Eat Greek food and read books about Greece from bookshelf which has more Greek related books than any major bookshop.

Tell myself that I will revise Greek language at least one hour every evening to stun friends with my fluency next year (in my dreams!) - strange how the week goes quickly by without achieving this.  Finally, current emergency measure is to get organised for Christmas so that it will soon be over and I can start thinking HOLS!!!

Hi Corfu-sick crew!

Good to know I'm not alone feeling this way. I usually feel down straight after a holiday but I'm finding that the older I get, the longer the 'down' lasts. I came home from Ag Stef mid August and STILL haven't got over it.

Oh dear I'm a lost cause I think.

since going to Corfu for the first time in 2003 I too just have to keep going back, this site is certainly great for sharing the 'CorfuBug' with others, it helps just a little to know you are not alone.

This year i made my first purchase of a greek music CD, it just takes me back right there!

And like everyone else I always have to book my return trip ASAP!

Sorry Corfu cal

Bookshelf - according to dictionary "Projecting slab of rigid material which can be hung on a wall or a board in a cabinet on which books etc stand"! For me this is one piece of wood about 5 foot in length completely full of books such as:    It's All Greek to Me, A House in Corfu, GreekWalls/Curfu Sunset, The Summer of My Greek Taverna, The Greek for Love, On a Greek Island, Eurydice Street (A Place in Athens), Greek-o-File, Greek Language Courses/Dictionaries/Phrase books. A bit of a theme going on here!!!

Here's how I managed the "astral traveling"  that my soul used to do every time I returned to New York after a Corfu vacation.  The symptom: I used to awake in the middle of the night  and think I was in Corfu, and of course I became disoriented because I didn't recognise my room! It was scary and lasted for weeks after each trip.) My soul longed to be back on my beloved island in the Ionian Sea.  But alas, my body was in New York. It really was a spiritual struggle. At first I just thought I was dreaming, but discovered that my astral body had a "mind" of its own and would leave me in bed and wander off to find it's way back to Greece....

The solution: I pasted a world map on the wall right next to my bed so that  my astral body could find it's way back to me while I slept. IT WORKED.  I WAS  NEVER DISORIENTED AFTER THAT. I hope this doesn't sound too far out for most of you, but I imagine some of you have experienced similar  journeys.  These nightly excursions stopped occuring after my fifth trip. That was right after I promised myself that I will relocate some time down the road when the timing is right, and it seems to have fulfilled my soul's wish to just be there, where , when Homer the Iliad, he said "Corfu is where God had a love affair with the planet Earth".   That's all I know. Peace, love and serenity, Suzi

Phew ...........  I'm a little relieved it was just a different thought process. I have been pondering what the problems was with "bookshelf" and decided that I am now so behind the times that no-one has even heard of the word and I should get rid of it immediately! I can stop worrying where I would put my books and go back to the major problem of the original post.

Have been to Leeds to meet up with my holiday group which was lovely but caused my home-sickness for Corfu to build up again so I'm going to watch a couple of episodes of My Family and Other Animals (original BBC series) which I've just bought.

Hi Gill

You aren't losing it and neither is corfucal. I suspect the misunderstanding arose from the bit of your post which I've quoted above. I misread it at first too but then realised it was the colloquial style in which it was written.

Trying to be helpful not critical - hope you don't mind.

Hi Paul - yes, I see what you mean about my post. I think it was just a mistake that I missed out the word 'my' next to 'bookshelf'. I wish I could claim it was colloquial but I fear it was just a case of not checking properly. ( I hope none of my past typing/WP students read this site!!!!)

And now more confusion .....     maybe this should be my last post!

Rhinofan - Sorry, my trip to Leeds was not a formal 'meet up', more of a boozy night out at a friend's house. I live in Manchester but each year go on a 'girly' holiday with friends I met originally in Corfu. They live in Pudsey/Stanningley in Leeds and I stay over once in a while to chat, sort out holiday arrangements and generally drink a lot of Metaxa - just to keep in training!  Do you live near this part of Leeds?

Try this one - another way I cope - I  prepare  (now) for the  next trip - although it may be an eternity away -  I just bought a few things  earmarked for Corfu and have placed them (lovingly) in a suitcase for my next journey to Hellas. I won't be  flying over until the beginning of June, but will still need toiletries (shampoo,  toothpaste, etc.)  you know.......little things that make me realize that my "homecoming" is a reality.

My next purchase will be a new pair of sandals just for Corfu, of course. In the suitcase they go..... and the luggage remains in plain sight all the while, as a constant "pick me up" and energizer.

There's no rush to pack, so each week I pick up another little something to add to the treasure chest. This definitely works to help "keep my eye on the goal"

Hope this helps someone....Suzi

Hi Carol

Oh yes, I really enjoyed reading 'The Holiday' and also Maeve Binchy's 'Nights of Rain and Stars', which I'm sure you'll have read. The Summer of Myu Greek Taverna is by Tom Stone, On a Greek Island is a lovely book - a personal account of a family with young children living on the island of Paros and written by Fionnuala Brennan. I've also got a little book by Austen Kark who bought a house in Nauplion in the 60's called Attic in Greece - a little before our time of travelling to Greece but quite entertaining.

These books transport me back to summer times in Corfu and help me cope with the winter. Send me a PM if you need any ISBN numbers to track them down. Enjoy!

Changed my avatar - that's another attempt of coping with missing my beloved island.  If I can't touch the tarmac,  at least I can see the runway from here. And it looks like we are coming in for a lovely landing. It's only on a flat screen, but come June it will be for real. Hope this comforts someone.

I also changed my signature - I know if I see the same thing  day in and day  out, I  become desensitized and subconsciously ignore it. So - here's to my new signature.   Suzi

Sweet Kathy2, I loved your ode

It made me smile and ponder.

I have 6 months, or even more,

Afore round the Isle I wander.

I, too, have photo albums

Which have to serve me ‘til

I get to Agni – there I stay –

I find it really brill!!

Such wondrous views and friendly folk

Make up that little bay.

Tavernas busy, smiling guests

Enjoying their sunny day.

So, yes, I live on memories,

Which last me for a year

And then to Agni, off once more

To sample good Greek cheer!

Hello Sue

There are at least 3 of us on here from Cornwall then (turn a Corfu map on its side and it looks a bit like Cornwall, coincidence?!).  Do you live in St. Austell?

This is snipped from an e-mail but the class started in September (£25 a term) and I was told that if I was a beginner it'd probably be best to wait until the next set of courses started (don't know when that'll be):

"There are three venues of Greek lessons for adults:
Penryn College, Tuesdays, 19:30-21:30
Hayle Community School, Wednesdays, 18:30-20:30
Wadebridge School, Thursdays, 18:30-20:30"

Either talk to Michalis on 07753 411452 or e-mail Caterina Noula at cnoula(replace with an 'at')yahoo.com (it was advertised in the West Briton).

I'm trying to learn a word a day - see how far I get before next summer's trip back:)

Feel free to PM me and maybe we could swap Cornish/Corfu info?

Good luck:)

Pam

When I come home from Kassiopi I spend months just playing Greek music

I have also been reading books about Grece, particularly Corfu.

Someone on this site mentioned some books for holiday reading and I've since found loads about Corfu.
