Herbal patch that fights a hangover as you go on drinking

(

A herbal patch that claims to counter the horrors of a hangover while a person is still drinking is being launched in Britain.

The skin patch, about the same size as a nicotine patch, was launched in America last year. It is now available online in Britain.

The patch contains four ingredients: milk thistle, artichoke, green tea and vitamin C, all of which are said to have some effect on hangovers.

The product, called Sober X, is being marketed by Preventx, which also sells home diagnostic tests.

Six patches can be bought online for about £20. Thomas Fotheringham, the managing director of Preventx, said yesterday: "This has proved very popular in the US. It is designed to release a formula that gives the body protection against toxins.

"You put it on before you start drinking and you feel better the next day. But we do not claim this is a complete cure."

Michelle Hart, the director of Sober X, said she hoped the product's success in America would continue in Britain.

"No doubt the majority of adults will be suffering from a hangover this New Year's Day, so we're delighted to be launching in Britain," she said.

"There's been some extensive research done in the US. Our patches have only natural nutrients in them such as milk thistle, which has been proved to protect the liver and help it break down toxic substances."

Don Shenker, the director of policy and services at Alcohol Concern, said the best way to deal with a hangover was to avoid one.

"Not drinking too much is the best thing to do," he said. "Herbal or chemical remedies are not going to help the damage the body suffers from excessive drinking. There is only one message: drinking excessively is bad for you."

Last week a study of herbal and other hangover remedies could find no convincing evidence that they worked. The survey, in the British Medical Journal, found a "paucity" of quality-controlled trials on the effectiveness of a range of treatments.

The small number that showed any promise included an extract of borage, a dried yeast product and tolefenamic acid, a prescription drug usually given for migraine.

Hi Roseanne,

Why waste £20, on top of what ever your night out costs. All one needs to do is drink a glass of water now and then, or bottled water, and a good glass of water when you get home. Hangovers, as you know is dehydration, rehydrating with water reduces or gets rid of hangovers.

Whats this I see on the news today. A pub/bar in Scotland has been granted a 31 hour licence from 6pm on the 31st, to 1.30am on the 2nd Jan. 31 hours, anyone would deserve a hangover, .

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL.

Yammas, Chris

I have tried this and stayed open until 4 in the morning with a 24 hours licence...didn't think it was worth the bother...but most city pubs do really well with these hours.

I think that in Scotland people traditionally will visit houses more then go to a bar at New Year...coal sugar and salt...and a bottle of their favorite drink...this surprisingly has been reinvented again with small amounts of coal, sugar and salt rapped in cling film tied together with a bow or something similar...nice I think..

I bet your both good looking....

this sometimes works if you havent had water before you sleep-but a trip to the chemist is needed beforehand

take 1 vitamin c tablet and 2 evening primrose tabs and a resolve extra upon waking

then take 1 vitamin c and 1 evg primrose every hour for 2 hours and a litre of water an hour sipped over the hour

long winded i know ,but enough to make you feel better by lunchtime

if you can eat, something starchy is also good:toast+honey, beans on toast,or even dry bread

it always works for me ans i am a really poorly morning after drinker!!

Hangover cure?

Your liver, your kidneys, your lungs - and that's all.

Hangovers are a combination of a mild toxic blood status ( due to congeners etc ), dehydration and sleep deprivation ( poor quality REM when sloshed); your own body clears these up, and you can hasten it with painkillers fluids and rest.

Preventative measures - just keep well hydrated, drink quality wines beer or spirits in moderation. Skin patch? Yeah, right,,,,,

Well, after consuming a whole bottle of wine by myself () plus some bubbly at midnight, three glasses of water before falling into bed did the trick for me.  Just a couple of paracetemols for a slightly muzzy head  and I'm absolutely fine!

I used to get terrible hangovers and then i started taking green tea tablets and milk thistle as they are supposed to increase your matabalism (give that a go i thought to loose a few pounds after last new year) and touch wood i have not had a bad hangover since!! been taking them a year now...i also drink green tea!!

I found out a few months after taking them that it breaks down the toxins in the blood too and helps the liver function  better!!

Also an Alkatelzer before bed works!!

Im so glad the drinking and eating rubbish is finallay over...until next time!!

love karen xx

p.s ha ha...the other half is on the big white telephone this morning! bless...maybe he needs to start taking the tablets...or stop drinking..that works too!!
