Just wanted to share with you all...
I stopped smoking on the 21st January after smoking for 20 years+ I am feeling great but will admit to a couple when I was in Corfu in May. I am doing exercise classes a few nights a week and almost keep up with the 20 and 30 year olds!!! Yes you do gain weight when you stop smoking but I have learned to be patient and appreciate that it will probably be next year before I start to get into real shape. If I can do it then anyone can. If you want help then think about the NHS groups in your area...I found it was good to talk to the other girls who were there although the group leader had obviously never had a cigarette in her life so was little help...we did get free patches etc

Well done paleogirl, I am an ex smoker too, use to smoke between 20-30 a day, but gave up 23 years ago and would not smoke a cigarette even if you offered me a million pounds.

Well done Paleogirl. I gave up in April after having smoked for 45 years. It's not easy and as you say the weight goes up. I prefer to be a non smoker with a little extra weight than a smoker that was permantly out of breath. I found the nicotine lozengers helped me.

I too gave up over 30 years ago and it is now my worst nightmare that I have started smoking again.
I think the reason that ex-smokers are more anti smoking than folks who have never smoked is that they feel that if they can do it then anyone can. That's how I feel anyway! However - now I eat and drink too much. Hey Ho!

Congratulations. I need to join you. I do worry about weight gain because of health problems my weight is monitored. The person who monitors my weight wants me to stop smoking. Can I continue to diet and stop smoking at the same time?

We stopped smoking about 25 years ago but my doctor said the effects would be there for many years and has only just this years changed my records to show me as a non smoker. The good news is that I always made myself invest every month what it would have cost us to smoke. I sometimes struggled to find this money but as a smoker I would have found it from somewhere, wouldn't I? This was at a time when investments and shares rose quite rapidly and after 17 years we bought our house in Corfu with this money, so when people tell me I'm lucky to have our house, with a ciggie hanging out of their mouths, I do feel the need to point out that it was a choice, either smoke or have the house in Corfu. It was this thought in my mind that kept me away from smoking for all these years although, of course, I wouldn't touch one now anyway as smokers seem to be treated like second rate citizens in recent years.

Interesting story Graham. Certainly puts things into perspective.
I gave up on 9-3-09, coincidentlly, the day I had a mild heart attack. Certain death is a great motivator but it has to happen to you before you take notice of all the evidence.

Kaffy I used the weight situation as my reason/excuse for not giving up earlier. The reality is I have tried to diet and exercise at the same time and this has meant I've not put on stones but lots and lots of pounds. But they will come off and with the exercise I walk tall because I am proud that I am trying to get fit.
Just had the nice man from Hydro Electric in to read the meter this morning- don't know him but I can tell he's a smoker-yuk!!!

Well done paleogirl. I stopped on my birthday four years ago, after many failed attempts. I think I succeeded this time because I actually WANTED to stop. Previous attempts, I realised, were because I thought I should stop - a very different thing. I used to be quite offended when people said smokers smelled, but now I can smell smoke on people as soon as they walk into a room! Keep up the good work! Moyra

Congrats to everyone who has given up...now it's my turn (especially after whats just happened to me in Corfu). Never been a heavy smoker, but realise it will be hard (more so when I'm on holiday as I do smoke more in Corfu I'm afraid). Any help would be most appreciated.

I had a couple in May when in Corfu and under the influence one night!! Luckily was not inclined to repeat the experience. For most people I think that it's either you smoke or you don't - there are a very few who smoke occasionally but these people are not addicted...lets face it we are. If you want to stop then link in with someone else so you can support each other or as I did the NHS group. If you don't want to do it but think you should then it won't work for long- don't beat yourself up about it, make a plan and then get stuck in. Good luck.

I stopped smoking cigars 5 or 6 years ago after reading a post from Bruce and Maria, and whenever I smell a good cigar, I am interested, but why would I start smoking again?
