Hi, We have just heard that a friend who was holiday in Corfu was taken into hospital and has pneumonia. He was taken from the airport- does anyone know which hospital this might be and can you offer us any advice on what we can do to support him from England? e.g. do we need to send food, pj's, toiletries or are these provided? Can anyone also advise on the eficiency of the postal service and recommend a carrier. Any other advice would be helpful. Thanks

I assume he is on his own in Corfu??? You could try the main general hospital in Corfu Town or the Poly Clinic also Corfu Town I am sure some of the forumsters living in Corfu would be able to advise and assist you in any queries you may have though with regards to transporting any essentials your friend might need.
I wish your well and send get well wishes for your friend.

He will nearly definitely be in Corfu Hospital, which is slightly north of the town, towards Kontokali and Gouvia.
Not trying to worry you, but is your friend here alone? If so and you have friends on the island I would advise you to get in touch and ask them if they can go and see if there is anything he needs. Medical care will be given, but nothing else unless there is someone there to provide for him, or he has paid for care. It is normal for families to look after in-patients, bringing meals, clothing etc.
Equally, again if you have friends here, it would be a lot quicker, and probably cheaper, to transfer some cash and get things like pjs, toiletries etc purchased here.
If you don't know anyone, and he is alone on the island, you might be advised to have a quick word with the British Consulate here to see if they can help or offer advice. Their contact details can be found on this link.
Hopefully though he is not alone, so I am worrying you unnecessarily! Be assured that whatever shortfalls in general care may be experienced the medical care is excellent.

Ask his tour company, if he came on a package- they should be able to tell you where he is, and give you contact details for the rep. who is visiting him, if not forbidden by the dreaded Data Protection legislation!

Thanks for your replies and advice so far especially the useful contacts and links. Yes he is on his own and we think he travelled independently rather than with a tour operator. I have tried the Consulate but they are closed now so will try again tomorrow. We are trying to find out his insurance company so we can get some help from them if they have a local agent. They are feeding him but he is a veggie and keeps getting chicken!
It sounds like Greek hospitals are like Italian ones- very good medical care but family are expected to do personal care and you get fed chicken and 'white' food when recovering. Thanks again.

Would holiday insurance not cover any nursing/care ect? Bit worrying if you are holidaying alone in Corfu and have an illness/accident and there is no basic nursing care available? Or would you be taken to a different hospital if you are using travel insurance to get the help you might need?
Hope your friend is OK!!! julesxx

Just to update you on our friend in hospital. We have managed to find where he is and the hospital looks excellent on its website http://www.corfugeneralclinic.gr/ with ITU and a foreign patients unit to liaise with insurance and relatives. They are feeding him and he said the food was excellent today. We have also been in touch with his insurer and they are now liaisng with him and the hospital. Another friend has been in touch with the Consulate officer who said he would pop in to see him with some books. He has his luggage and so is OK for clothes.
Thank you so much for all your help and especially to Jan for offering to visit. We are less worried now as his temperature is down and oxygen levels up. Having seen the hospital website we are not so concerned that he is on his own and doesn't speak Greek.
Weather in the UK is dreadful tonight so you are so lucky to be out there in the sun! Thanks again lovely people.

Great news, assume he is in the Polyclinic (general clinic) as opposed to the state hospital. If you/he would like a visit let me know and I will call in- nearly went tonight but found car was almost out of petrol and no garage open between here and Corfu Town, so had planned to go in the morning, but sounds as if he is fine anyway!

Philo, best wishes to your friend and hope he recovers very soon. Last year I spent 5 days in Corfu General Clinic after being taken very ill whilst on holidays and couldn't have asked for better treatment, being looked after etc. It's a great hospital and the lovely English lady who works there sorted so much out for me including insurance and flights back to the UK. She made a very traumatic time so much easier to deal with. My consultant even gave me a hug and a kiss when I was discharged! Don't reckon that would happen here in the UK....Again here's to a speedy recovery for your friend xx
