"At least 10 dead whales have been found washed up on Corfu beaches in recent days.
Coast guard officials said that fishermen had reported sightings of more dead mammals but that these have yet to be verified."
So sad. The first whale was found on Arillas beach in October and died despite the efforts of locals to refloat it and get it out to sea. It just returned to die. Since then others have beached and died in the area. They are beaked whales about 4m long. They live in very deep waters north of Corfu and can dive in excess of 1000 metres to eat giant squid. Such an incident isn't as rare as we may think. Only today the BBC News website reports over 3,500 whales, dolphins etc beached in UK over last 6 years!
