With Aegean flights costing around €300, I am considering a brief trip to the UK by ferry and rail, if I can do it for around the same price. I have looked at the site 'seat61' but it does seem complicated. With many visitors unable to fly for a variety of reasons, it would be good to make the journey and encourage others to do the same.
Has anyone made this trip, or have any ideas about the best and cheapest options?

I had a look a year ago but it seemed expensive to me. You have to change in Paris on way to UK. It seemed you had to buy tickets separately as opposed to just buying London-Venice. The total for 2 x trains and then ferry came out more expensive than flights. That was normal trains not the Orient Express!
An option maybe ferry to Brindlisi (sp) and then Easyjet or Ryanair. That won't help the non-flyers but may work out cheaper.

My brother will not fly. He has twice visited recently. He takes the Eurostar to Paris then changes stations there to catch another train to Venice and from there the 24 hour ferry to Corfu. He loves the journey although he has been robbed twice and I believe it is quite expensive. You might be better doing what my daughter did which was Corfu-Venice ferry and then UK charter back to London? Travelling that way saved her about 300euros.

Thanks Viv - London is fine. I have time and flexibility - it is money that is the limiting factor. There used to be deals via Euro Domino which could be really cheap if booked months in advance. I think they are now part of another group, but anything you can do will be appreciated. I have thought about ferry & flight, but there are people who simply cannot, or will not, fly, and that is what I want to consider. Looking at the initial prices on the 'seat61' website, I may be able to get close to the Aegean price for a flight. I would rather spend time relaxing on a train, than sit for hours in Athens.

Lavinia was he robbed on both journeys? Were the robberies on the trains? That is awful bad luck for him. Certainly if it's that dangerous I would feel safer going by plane.

How do those of you who do the trip from Italy to Corfu (or Igoumenitsa) manage to plan ahead?

Have you looked at the Eurolines website, they do some good deals sometimes... http://www.eurolines.co.uk/coach/Destinations/Europe/Europe-Introduction.aspx
Sadly not as far as Corfu but may cut costs for part of the journey.
