If there are any CAMRA members out there going to Corfu this year, have a look out for "Royal Ionian" lager. OK, it's not real ale in a bottle, but it is, in my humble opinion, much better than Mythos or Amstel [both Inbev)?. However, the point of this thread is the plug for the following website,
http://www.corfubeer.com/
Looks like real ale will soon be in the offing which makes going to Corfu even better than it already is. The brewery in a micro and seems to be based in Arillas, near San Stefanos [west]. I only found this beer on our last day in one supermarket, [Aris?] in Paleokastritsa.
Good luck and best wishes to all concerned in the venture.

Hi Terry,
We tried the Royal Ionian lager last year in our local taverna in Kavadades, Mon Amour (also known as Kokkinos to the locals), that had a blue label. This year Spiros, the taverna owner, was proud to show us the new pilsner lager, this had a green label Both very nice, but the pilsner seemed to be a bit yeasty, but still very quaffable. There is some information about this on the Arillas forum here Arillas forum Hope this is of help to you.

DAMN, that means I've got to go to Corfu AGAIN. Sorry for the late post, just got back from another wonderful holiday, and wasn't aware of the brewery. Only saw the bottle in one supermarket in Paleo.
Now what can I tell the missus?

We like the pilsner for that yeasty aftertaste and this week I saw bottles with the label 'CORFUBEER.COM' in the cooler at Sconto in Acharavi. Shame the website is not finished, but I was told they have a tasting day every Sunday.

If you are a member of CAMRA, could it not be a visit by the association to check out the new beers in Corfu for a CAMRA survey? They also sell it on draught at one of the restaurants in Arillas, will try to remember which one. May have been Sea Breeze.

That sounds good, but what excuse can I give her who must be obeyed? No matter, I've still got to wait 'til next year.
Have posted same message on the Peterborough branch of CAMRA, now waiting for moderator to clear.
I'll volunteer for the brewery visit!!!

Royal Ionian, beats Mythos and Amstel hands down. You can get it on draught in "R" Bar in Sidari also.
Tried both bottled varieties and really like them both.
8 days to go for an ice cold Ionian.

I thought an update was in order concerning the Corfu Brewery beers.
At present there 3 available, Ionian, a lager, Best Bitter a dark beer at 5% more akin to a winter beer and the Special, also at 5% which locals call the fruity beer. To me it is similar to T. Taylor
In Paleo, some are available at Aris supermarket, Nausica, Akron and Spiros Taverna though as the beers only have a shelf life of 2 months you may be unlucky.

Hi Plug,
I just wonder whether cask ale would last out here in the heat. We are looking at 100 + Fahrenheit now in June. Don't get me wrong, I love a really dark beer, my favourite is Spitfire, followed by many from our local Brewery in Norfolk, Woodfordes.
Hic!!!

Hi Elliemay,
You correct it has to be kept in cool room or it would soon go off. We have just had a beer fest kept all ale in a fridge van, (they have ice cream) but I must admit a iced glass full of Amstel in the heat???

I had the Corfu bitter and real ale at the Aquarious taverna in Sidari back in May and they were as good as most real ales you would find in a Weatherspoons back home. Yammas.

A yeasty after taste in beers. No good in light beers the whole idea of Pilsner means light. If a beer taste yeasty that is no good. The idea is to taste the bitterness, smells and flavors (Not the yeastiness) ...(where did you come by that!!!)
Pilsner will be argued as to where it comes from by the Czech and the Germans. I will say the Czech as the famous Budweiser hop comes from Czech. That goes into most lagers.

Hi Plug T
I am a CAMRA member and recently sampled your lovely ale at the Dent Music and Beer festival.
I'm afraid that I can only see the Royal Ionian beer being sold in bottles as surely it would be too hot to keep in the taps? However, I will bow to anyone's superior knowledge and I hope I am wrong!
More real ale for me the better!
Great hols all
Cheers

GJJW..
If you ever get the chance to come to Burton On Trent (the beer town) where I live...I'll give you my telephone number and I'll give you a night to remember at our cottage brewery. We have a great real ale called Halceian days. Plus other real ales...That the chap I work with makes at his pilot brewery...
P.S. We both work at Coors brewery...within the process dept...
Please also note if its real Real ale is served below room temperature...the same as red wine...

Hi Seaangler
Thansk for the offer.
I live in Fleetwood, near Blackpool so a visit could be arranged! Prefer the lighter ales myself, such as Hartleys Cumbrian way, Lancaster Blonde, Bowland Gold but I'm always open to trying any beers really (but no lager lol)!
Cheers

Just back from Sidari. There is now an excursion from one travel shop on a Friday evening to the Corfu Brewery in Arillas. Visit have samples, buy beer at 1.50€ a bottle and then onto a vinyard and see the winemaking process. Stop for meal on way home (price not included). Priced a bit high at 30€ so didn't go on it.
Found Corfu Beer, draught pilsner, at Waves Bar for 3€ a half litre. Bottles also available. Also found bottles of all 3 types in Sconto supermarket (behing Mimosa) for just 2.06€ a bottle.
