Fontana

Back to Top of Fontana PageFontana

This is one of the small but nevertheless important villages of Paxos. As in so many of the old Greek villages, its tiny square is sheltered by the spreading branches of an aged plane-tree and its focal point is a group of buildings including the church, the kafeneion, the school and a general shop, but the school is now closed and the local children attend school in Gaios. The 15th century church, when it is open, is worth visiting for its fine frescoes. The village shop in Fontana seems to exist in a time warp and is also worth a visit. Near Fontana is an olive press where you may still see the last of the olives being processed in spring and early summer.

Fontana, or Platinos as it is sometimes known, was aptly named after the shady plane trees that stand in the heart of the village.

In Fontana, the local Paxiots sit in the shade and play cards - watching the world go by in the company of the village cats. With one taverna, the village seems to be caught in a delightful time warp. Well worth a visit to either just stop for a drink or preferably, a bite to eat in the evening.
