Tavernas and Bars

Back to Top of Tavernas and Bars PageFood for thought

With clean Ionian waters, Paxos offers a wonderful selection of the freshest seafood. You will be spoiled for choice. Depending on the time of year, you will be able to choose from Whitebait and Red Mullet, fresh prawns and octopus, Red Snapper and Sea Bream. Remember that fish is sold by the Kilo and although a little expensive, it is very well worth the treat. Loggos and Lakka have several excellent fish tavernas.

Mezethes

A meze is not a meal course (although meze dishes can be served as appetizers), but rather a dish, hot or cold, spicy or savoury, often salty, that is served, alone or with other mezethes, as a separate eating experience.
Often a meze is served with a drink (especially Ouzo) to provide the accompaniment to a social gathering and people watching! Why not head to a waterfront taverna at Loggos and order a small meze - and you will soon slip into the Greek way of life!

Look out for freshly made Loukoumades - also known as 'Honey Puffs' by the local Paxiots. They are like small doughnuts, served topped with a warm honey syrup. Delicious.

Drink Greek when on holiday! It rounds off the whole experience.
Greek bottled water is far cheaper than the imported kind and just as good. If you want to get away from international brands of beer, try Mythos, brewed in Corfu. Also made in Corfu is the traditional ginger beer, known locally as tsintsinbirra. All the usual soft drinks are available on Paxos. Greek wines are excellent, and retsina may be an acquired taste but goes very well with Greek food and mezethes. If you find the flavour too strong, dilute with Sprite or soda. Koum kwat liqueur will no doubt be pressed upon you but it is extremely sweet - try mixing it with a little brandy for a more pleasing drink. Finally coffee - Greek coffee is strong, but you can choose to have it 'sketo' without sugar, 'metrio' with a little sugar, or 'gliko'if you like it sweet.
