The village of Magazia presumably once had enough shops to merit being named for them - the word 'magazi' means shop. Few in number compared to today's shops, they are worth a visit for their sense of existing in a time warp. In fact, Magazia was once the 'capital' of the island, in the days when it was dangerous to live on the coast, where the possibility of attack by pirates was very real.
The nearby church of Agioi Apostoloi stands overlooking Erimitis Cliffs and it lies at the end of the road opposite Agios Spyridonas, at the gas station of Magazia. To your left, you can see the Ortholithos rock, marking the entrance to the sea cave of the same name..
Past the Elementary School (Kastanida) there is a detour to the right and the view of the sunset there is not to be missed. There is now a pleasant bar beside the church, with incomparable views of the sunset.
