Mongonissi Beach Paxos

Mongonissi, 5 kms south of Gaios, is really a very small island, now linked to the island of Paxos by a small causeway, flanked by a very pleasant sandy beach. Forming a beautiful and very sheltered inlet, the bay of Mongonissi is popular with yachts who have always found shelter here from wind and weather. The swimming is superb – clean clear water shelves gently making it ideal for children and inexperienced swimmers.

Apart from the sandy beach by the taverna – one of only two sandy beaches on Paxos, the other being at Lakka, 10 kms away from Mongonissi - there are also two pebble beaches in the bay and any number of small rocky coves, perfect for snorkeling. There are water sports and kayaks can be hired, and the excellent taverna has a wonderfully laid-back, friendly atmosphere and frequently has entertainment in the form of music and Greek dancing. This is the ideal location for a family holiday.

The welcoming taverna is situated right on the sandy beach, with tables set out in a tree-shaded garden that makes the idyllic setting for leisurely meals. The kids may get bored with sitting still while the adults wind down after an enjoyable meal and the ideal solution is to let them play on the beach right in front of you. Could anything better encapsulate the appeal of an island holiday than this?

Evenings at the Mongonissi taverna can become very lively, with entertainment often provided by the customers themselves! Special attention gets paid to birthdays and other celebrations.

There are moorings for up to 50 yachts in Mongonissi Bay. This is one of the safest anchorages in the region.

Old stone ruins have their own melancholy charm, and the one on Mongonissi Island is no exception. The layout of the remaining walls suggests that it might once have been one of the numerous small chapels to be found everywhere on the island of Paxos.
