Years ago I lived on the Fens and every summer we were absolutely plagued with mosquitoes......one year, my son who is disabled, was so badly bitten I thought he had measles or chickenpox - or something equally grotty that kids are prone to .........called the GP and he was completely flummoxed until he finally sussed out that it was dozens of mozzie bites!
He had literally got bitten from head to foot overnight........our elderly neighbours who'd lived there all their lives advised us to leave an open bottle of clove oil in the rooms.......and when outside walking or gardening or whatever rub fresh parsley on any exposed skin..........no - you don't turn green ........using plantain leaves or a slice of lemon or onion to reduce the swelling and take the itch away if you did get a bite.........and it worked..........obviously you can't use the parsley whilst you're on holiday and you haven't always got the remedies to hand either!! But just as a thought ..........most mozzie bites seem to occur after dark when they've been attracted to a light don't they ?....I suppose you just could just pinch the lemon from your cocktail!! (or his! )
I always pack clove oil when travelling abroad and haven't been bitten once........another bit of useless info is it's supposed to be good for toothache too........the clove oil that is........takes the edge off the pain......tastes foul though!
Old wives tales maybe............but there's always truth in these old tales somewhere........and if it works it's a better option than spraying the rooms you're staying in (and yourself) with pesticide............
