If there are any bird experts out there I need help identifying a large bird of prey seen daily in Agios Georgios north. Other visitors called it an eagle but the locals say it is a hawk and definitely not an eagle.
Tantalisingly it always saw me first when it was perched in tall trees and was soon away giving me only brief glimpses unless it was soaring.
It is larger than a buzzard, which are also around, but soars like one on roundish wings and swoops to the ground to catch its prey. It is much darker than a buzzard, quite blackish with light patches underneath. I did get get a good look at its tail shape.
I know quite a bit about British birds and this did not fit the description of any I know.

Honey Buzzards are very common on Corfu.

There are something like 3-4 pairs of Golden Eagles in the high mountains that sometimes come lower down teaching their young to hunt.

On another bird note, in the autumn when the migratory birds are heading south, the north of Corfu is a morning stepping off point. For about a fortnight we are often woken by this earie sound which turns out to be thousands of birds, all chirping/calling at once, climbing higher and higher for sometimes as long as an hour as the flock builds up, then they are gone. Our grandaughter says they are waiting for someone who knows the way.

Bob.

Shall ask birdie-type expert friend who was on Paxos recently and may be able to report something similar. Will let you know what he comes up with!

Thanks for the suggestions.

They definitely were not Buzzards which I see daily around my home in UK. I had wondered about Harriers but the habitat doesn't suit their usual preferences.

Having had chance to look up the gen and photos on Booted Eagles I am fairly sure that is what we saw. The description, habitat and appearance all tie in. Next year I will attempt to get better views and confirm it.

Hi Leo.

There is something wrong with your web site addresses, they do not hi-light, so would have to be written down before accessing.

Sorry. Would love to view them but as you probably know, by the time you have copied them down, put them into search, the smallest mistake and you are up the creek.

Regards Bob.

Bob

They highlighted OK for me in the usual way by just dragging the cursor across the URLs.

It was easy to paste into the browser address bar.
