Whats corfu airport like? Just wondering how big it is etc. I've heard it can take a while to get your bags.

Hi Melissa,
Corfu Airport is relatively small compared to probably what you are use to, and sometimes can get busy on certain days. These are normally Mondays, Fridays & Saturdays. On these days, yes it can take a bit of time for your baggage to come through, but you must realise it is not as automated as Gatwick, Heathrow, and many other airports in the UK.
If you arrive on a busy day, disembark from the aircraft, go through immigration, and then relax. Go out side and have a smoke, (if you smoke), go an have a drink, but do not get involved with the hussle bussle of others trying to get their luggage. When it has calmed down a bit, go back in and get yours, it will still be there. And more importantly your transfer coach will wait until you have checked in with your rep.
Remember, your holiday is suppose to be a relaxing time, so make sure you relax, and dont get roller coasted into the rat race that others can make on arrival.
It never bothers me, I am in no rush, and I do not see the point of being pushed and shoved when 15 - 20 minutes time you can just go in and pick up your cases.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Sounds good but after my case not arriving a couple of years ago. I now wait for my cases as they first arrive, just to make sure they arn't picked up by someone else.

Hi Melissa, if you're like me and enjoy a bit of people watching, then you'll appreciate Corfu airport!
When we get to the baggage reclaim hall, I "abandon" David and let him wait for our cases.....I head on outside, catch my first few rays of sun and watch all the the comings and goings.......great fun!

I'll remember that thanks. I don't reckon i'll leave aaron to get the cases on his own though god knows what we would end up with. We'd probably end up with someone elses but i'll be sure not to rush thanks.

Not the biggest Airport, but want we do let the rush pass an d then walk up pick the cases and walk onto the coach, by this time the people who rush in got the cases and sitting on the coach getting very warm... and off we go... Same on the way back we prepare a pack lunch for the kids and our selfs, when off the coach (on the busy days) find a spot and have lunch let the others panic/rush, the join the the line watered and feed...
I can be mad on certain days but we see it has part of our hols, lets face it your in greece (no problems..!)

UMMM. Arrived there at 1.30 from Manchester and case never came up. When everyone had collected their's - and that included following arrivals, and I was reporting it lost - it suddenly turned up on the conveyor belt. Got to hotel at 3.30 am - leaving for ferry at 6, but rep and hotel staff great.
This really does depend when you depart. Midnight and the queue is stretching round the block. No one really knows what check-in it's for and know one can really see what's happening in the Hall which is packed. Good job it's not too hot. Very few reps to be seen, and those that are there don't have much of a clue what's going on. Later, as even more coaches are dropping of departees, reps with them are lining them up on the grass verge opposite. Once in the Hall there are machines luggage has to go through before being checked in - 20 mins befor take off our group gets in there to go through these and find check in empty. Very efficient cleaners. Nuff said. Take water, refreshments and a good book, just in case!

Corfu Airport is wonderful after the huge airports over here! Off the plane, then up the ramp, through passport control then your into baggage reclaim! Its a bit of a push here, dont know why peeps have to stand right at the front and race to get there, maybe its another British thing? Its not going to make your bag come out any faster! I always nip out and check the weather and have a smoke and just enjoy the feeling that I am back there then go back and check to see my bag is out!
Coming home, never as much fun, in fact, I hate it. Corfu airport is always boiling hot and if your delayed the plastic moulded seats arent much fun!
Have a lovely holiday! xx

Last september we got off the plane walked up the stairs towards passport control, 5 mins tops to get through, walked up to the carousel, it began to operate, the first case was ours and the 10th case was ours
Walked outside, the guy was waiting with our hire car
Plane landing to arriving at appartments = 50 minutes.
Unbelievable? believe it

I was delayed at Corfu airport once. Was feeling a bit peckish so I bought a Toblerone. Having taken a bite I glanced down and noticed that something had got to it first and left it's little yellow wriggly babies to hatch.
Never been able to eat Toblerone since!!

Our experience arriving three weeks ago at lunch time was that the luggage arrived a heck of a lot quicker than at many British airports. The luggage hall was air conditioned and there are plenty seats. The loos downstairs are clean - just like in the rest of the terminal.

Just thought I would add something to the last reply- It's worth noting that if you arrive at the airport early for your flight home you may have to wait outside the building itself (my parents had to for 1 hour) before they call you in to queue at the check in desks. If you are hiring a car then you can bear this in mind and make a mental note not to arrive too early.

Hi Melissa, The first thing you notice is the landing at the airport, it sticks out into the sea. Depending on the wind direction you can come in over the water to land. See a picture on Web Photos link below.
Then you step out of an airconditioned plane and the heat hits you :-) down the steps and onto a bus that will take you the short distance to the terminal, up the ramp and into passport control. Then as many others have said RELAX don't rush, your coach or hire car will wait for you, you don't have to worry about being first in the queue, your bags will find their way up to the carousel and you can pick them up. Go and grab a drink or have a look outside.
Enjoy your holiday.

your'e not wrong, dave! after many flights to corfu, we had our first daylight landing, and it was wonderful! you could nearly wave at people in nearby bars. as you come down, you think, no no he's overrun and forgotten where he's going, but they turn really steeply and then come in to land. great start to your holiday!

Ian - I share your nervousness about flying - but landing at Corfu seemed pretty much OK to me - nothing too exciting (and I mean in the sense that exciting for a nervous flyer ain't good!).
Very pretty though - seem to recall we descended between Albania and the island, if you get a window seat gaze out and enjoy, it's a real picture - guaranteed to take your mind off any worries.
Airport itself is fine - quite compact - we were in and out very quickly.
(PS If you want a really scary landing try Madeira - landing is preceded by the captian saying something like - "we'll be throwing the plane around a bit, but there's nothing to worry about, it's one of the most practised landings in the book!")

Seeing the fantastic views and the twinkling blue sea and all the greenery, you will forget about the runway!
Believe me, after years of landing at Palma, Tenerife, Alicante and thinking I had arrived somewhere in the middle of a desert, Corfu Airport is an absolute joy!

Corfu airport is heaven compared to the airport in Zante!!
We went there a couple of years ago, and had heard all the horror stories but never took too much notice but when we arrived we saw what they meant!! Three planes had landed within a very close time, with ours being the third. There was one small carousel, in a building that seemed no bigger than our living room (we don't have a large living room!) with no air conditioning (or not any that worked anyway!) Well, as usual every man and his dog pushed and shoved to get closest to the carousel and me being me, decided to get outside, have a ciggie and take in the show!!
As I sat outside, I noticed one Greek guy in airport uniform standing under a clear plastic canopy in the mid afternoon sun looking towards the runway. I assumed he was some sort of supervisor at first, but when the first electric cart with 3 trolleys full of suitcases pulled up next to him, I noticed the conveyor belt in front of him, I then realised he was one of the guys who unloaded the trolleys onto the conveyor, which then ran onto the carousel.
It wasn't until he had got half way through unloading, that I noticed he wasn't ONE of the guys unloading, he was the ONLY guy doing it!! This poor fella was humping three plane loads of luggage, ALONE, under a clear plastic canopy in the middle of the Greek summer!! With every suitcase, the sigh got larger, he wasn't a happy bunny, but still got every case onto the belt on his lonesome! Well, after witnessing this, I didn't even moan about the 2 and a half hour wait for our luggage, that poor guy deserved a medal!!
The return was just as bad, we had to wait outside the airport for something like 2 hours, again in the middle of the day, there were queues of people going all around the outside of the airport, all the way to the main road. Its times like that you wish you had a night flight, I can tell you!!
Hope this hasn't put anyone of visiting Zante though, all was soon forgotten when we got to the resort and a great holiday was had by all (except for me being ill for most of it, but thats another story!) I am sure we just had an off day when we arrived, it can't be like that every time, or can it??.........

When we arrived in zante a few years ago four planes landed within a few minutes of each other, it was total chaos. The reps were trying to heard everyone like cattle to the back of the airport, as luck would have it we were the first to be "sent" to re-claim as our plane was the first to be unloaded, still took well over an hour though (glad i wasnt on the last plane tho`). We did go in august so it was the busiest time, still had great time on the island and wouldnt let it put me off going back, sarah wants to go in july but im holding out for a deal to corfu

Zante airport is hilarious, but has now been updated a bit (just a little though, and not that you'd really notice).
The airport there was originally built identically to Kos airport, which has had a complete overhaul and is now a pleasure to pass though.......Zante/Corfu, please take note

I normally wait about the same time for my bag to arrive in the UK as I do in Corfu, on average 15 to 30 minutes. The difference in the UK London airports is you don't feel like your waiting so long because you have a long distance to travel to get to baggage reclaim.
At Corfu it is all there in your face after the shortest bus trip in the world (done for safety reasons) and a very short walk into the terminal.
Last year I felt like the luckiest man alive as I walked into the terminal at corfu, glanced at the window and saw the little baggage truck over-ladden with luggage and mine was clearly visible on top!
As the carousel whirred into action my bag arrived first, oh the joy of being in pole position! So I was out, in the cab and gone before most others got their luggage. Never happened before or since, but there is always hope!

we came back on monday and did have a long wait outside in the check out queue, mind you they did open all the doors and allowed the air-conditioned cool air to blow out on us. down side was that once thru the departure lounge was not air conditioned and was baking hot.
problem was caused by a couple of flight delays so not really airports fault, staff seemed really good humoured all things considered, a few passengers were moaning but they were probably just the type that do anyway!
just need to go prepared for a wait, dont believe your rep when he tells you that it will only be 10 minutes, stay chilled and make sure you carry some water with you.
only problem we had on way in was that they mixed up the cases from the 2 flights that had just come in and sent us to the wrong carousel... which was more of a laugh than anything.

It's been quite amusing reading through all the replies. We've all been there the first time in Corfu. When you've done it a couple of times you're wise to the fact that the pilots are first class. Don't rush to get off the plane as your cases won't be. Go to the loo, go outside for a ciggie or a drink. Stroll back in, look for cases being unloaded off plane and and then go to carousel.
On the way back, on a morning flight, check cases in, stay outside in the sunshine until around half an hour before boarding and then go through passport control. The longer I can stay in Corfu the better.

Just back from another excellent stay......but the airport departure coming back was......ummmmm.......very busy! Gather it often is fairly chaotic.
Check in was due to open at 11.45am - didn't until 1.30pm - in the meantime you had to wait outside the airport building ...very little info coming out.
Best tip one of the reps gave us was that there is a cafeteria inside the terminal on the first floor, where you can go and have a coffee and watch the departure screens - you'll know sooner than the hordes outside when your check in's opening, then you can partake in the scramble! Cafeteria's air conditioned in case you've done enough sun!

Totally agree Chipping, but you couldn't get to the cafeteria loaded up with luggage, because they don't allow you (or didn't let us) through the luggage scanners until your flight check-in has been opened
How did you/when did get through? Did you still have your luggage?

Have to say I didn't go in - stayed outside with the luggage and enjoyed the sun, smoking the last of my holiday cigars.
Sent my wife and slightly frazzled mum in law up there. The rep said it wasn't a problem to take the luggage - there was a lift provided up to the first floor, and my wife came out with refreshements after an hour or so and said the same thing. Entrance was somewhere in the middle of the airport building - between arrivals and departures. My wife said it was fairly empty up there.

Went to Zante last year - yes the airport is still cattleshedish but they have now put cannopies outside so you're not in the blazing sun!!! They also have an air conditioned smoking area when you go through passport control.
This May in Corfu there was no indication which of the two carousels your luggage was coming on with 3 flights landing at the same time - I just dropped lucky when I spotted the cases belonging to the people who checked in in front of me in Manchester. - Lazyarse had sloped off for a sneaky cigar so I ended up almost climbing over the carousel to get both cases off which came out together - not brilliant when you're only 5 foot nothing!!! The return was the usual chaos - stood in a long queue outside for over an hour - it seemed that people travelling with Argo Travel were whisked in straight away and the rest of us left outside but perhaps their flight was iminent!! Won't stop me travelling to Corfu or anywhere else in Greece

The luggage carousels at Corfu have 3 TV screens above each which indicate which carousel is handling which flight's luggage, perhaps there weren't working for some reason when you were there.

This year was a real breeze at Corfu airport, we got through passport control, I went to the loo, got back to the missus and she went with her mum, by the time they returned I had allfour suitcases on a trolley waiting to find our coach!! Gods honest truth, we couldn't believe it!!15 minutes, tops! Normally we just hang around for a bit, go for a smoke etc. till you can get closer to the carousel without getting crushed in the stampede, but I found a space, and the cases just kept on coming!
I should note that there is a downside to this, if you are on a coach transfer you still have to wait for everyone else to get their cases so instead of waiting in the airport, you are sitting on a coach waiting, but I know which one I prefer, even if it doesn't get you to your destination any quicker!

Airport reasonable size, in departures there is a cafe and a duty free shop but limited seating

No probs this year at Corfu airport, though why do peeps as soon as the plane takes off insist on swapping seats to empty ones, arent they all the same????

There can be a delay getting luggage. Go to the Cafe around the corner and get a couple of bottles of water, as depending on what time you arrive, it will be hot during the day and if you arrive late night the shops may be closed.
On your departure, do the same, make sure you have plenty of water.
Queues at the airport can still be manic, but they have now installed x-ray scanners permanently. These are located by the check-in desks. Make sure you are in the right queue for your desk as there is 2 x-rays for one row of desks, so half the desks use one machine and half use the other.
If you are not sure which to use just ask a rep there are plenty at the airport.

We had no problems at all with the airport last year, but when we returned at the weekend it was an absolute nightmare - stood outside queuing for over an hour, then nowhere to sit as a lot of delays, then sat on the plane for over half an hour waiting for all the luggage to be put on - didn't help that when we got to Gatwick we had to wait and wait for the luggage to appear!
Amazing how on the way home these little things are not so exciting isn't it, and the patience runs a little low....!!!
Rest assured we will never let it ruin our holiday memories though!

I went to corfu airport last month and took everyone's messages on board. Relaxed, went outside, had a drink...After an hour, the Newcastle flight bags had not shown on the screen. We kept asking people at the airport who told us to wait. After a couple of hours a rep came in and took our names (there were loads of us). Then another rep came to tell us that our bags were still in Newcastle. At that point, someone from the Newcastle flight had found their bags going round with others from another flight - we went over and found ours as well... after three hours the Newcastle flight was never shown as arrived - I don't think it ever did. It was as bad going back -- we were taken to the airport 3 hours before the flight was due - waited outside for more than 2 hours until a check in desk opened... But we had just had a fantastic holiday in Kalami - so we were mellow!

You shouldn't have a problem pre-arranging assistance (wheelchair/pre-board/airport help) from the airline/tavel company you're travelling with. Contact them to make arrangements.

I saw a young lady at the airport in June who got off the coach to go home and a rep fetched her a wheelchair, so I would say you will be OK. You could always contact you holiday company and tell them the situation beforehand, maybe they can arrange one to be waiting for you when you arrive? Its worth a try anyway
Hope everything goes well

If you have a solid suitcase, you could always do what I do and use it as a temporary seat if the queueing is getting a bit much
I'm sure that the reps/airport staff would be happy to allow you inside the terminal building for a seat if you explain your situation. Then, hopefully you should still be chair free
Hope you sort something out!

Airports, eh, love 'em or loathe 'em, they are there and on the whole, they do a great job. Unfortunately, the world has changed forever and long check-in times, security checks here, there and everywhere ar here to stay and that is no different in Corfu. So when I went to Corfu earlier this month for the very first time I had heard about the queueing at the airport when you are returning to the U.K, so I was prepared. It wasn't as though I wanted to leave Corfu a.s.a.p. but if the checking-in procedure was to take a little longer then I dreaded the idea of a mad rush from one end of the island (Roda) to the airport. But I was surprised. Our coach had people destined for 2 airports in the U.K, Manchester and Glasgow. The Manchester check-in was open, the Glasgow was not. Ours was Manchester so we were told to go straight into the departures building and get in the queue. Those for Glasgow were asked to wait outside the main building until our rep from Thomas Cook told you otherwise. As we was bound for Manchester we trundled our luggage into Departures, got in the queue, around 15 minutes later we had our hold luggage x-rayed, then we carried on in the same queue after collecting our luggage again to the check-in desks ( 10 feet away) for them to be weighed (gulp, all that ouzo!) and get our seats on the plane. I think we were lucky, strangely on the day of our departure (11th July) we had a bit of rain, not too much but, and this is where I can understand peoples concerns. If you had to wait for check-in to open and it was 95 degrees or, heaven forbid, it was persistantly raining as it can do in early or late season, then it can be a problem.
As for the airport, small, functional (just!), great for watching planes take off and land (sorry, I've got my anorak on again). Once through passport control in Departures and you will immediately find that it is quite small compared to some other European airports but, hey, who cares? It is clean and almost impossible to get lost.
If you can get the chance, take a step back, look around and take it all in. Airports are a part of our holidays and why not make the experience an interesting one, memorable sometimes for the few for the wrong reason, but admittedly but we can't really do without them.
Cheers me dears, Tony.
