Hi there jrk,
We did it last year, as we were going over to Athens for a couple of days and the hire-car we had in Corfu was not allowed to be taken off the island. We got an early ferry that got into Igoumenitsa for about 7.30ish. We then had time for breakfast from one of the pavement cafe's across the road from the port. We hired a car from Avis (they opened at 9am). They are on Kritis Street (5 minutes walk from ferry over the road and just round the corner from our breakfast!!)
Service was great and they also supplied a SatNav which made finding our way round Athens a breeze (without it I would imagine it's a bit of a nightmare). The car battery died on us just after we parked up at the hotel in Athens but they arranged a mechanic to visit and repair first thing next morning with no problems.
It was rather a long journey as until you get to the Riou-Antirriou bridge there are no dual carriageways and some very windy roads - but the scenery is breathtaking. Plenty of villages to stop in for refreshments as you drive though.
We had looked at flying to Athens but the comparative costs for a family of 4 made car hire an easy choice.

I meant to add as a supplementary question, what is the cost one way for a car these days on the Corfu-Igoumenitsa ferry. Anyone got even rough idea? Also passenger fares?

Foot passenger fares were about 8€ p/p return and parking if you want to leave your car in the port while you're on the mainland was 2 or 3€. Remember thinking that it was cheaper to leave the car in Corfu port for 3 days than it is to park in our local multi-storey for an afternoon!!
Don't know about rates for cars I'm afraid

Having family on the mainland we do this trip a lot.
Last time was in August 11 when we paid around €80 return (including the car). A return trip without a vehicle would I imagine be in the region of €15 per person this year.
A single trip with 2 people and a car came to €58 (a year or so ago).
With fair notice, Value Plus do allow you to take cars off the island, but you lose any on-site breakdown/accident support.
