Central heating for the overall warmth with no coldspots, open fire in the sitting room for the cosiness in the evening.

You have to watch those dehumid thingies. They will dry you out if your not careful. They literally suck the moisture out of everything. I had one going in a building extension... couldn't understand why my eyes were getting sore and I was constantly thirsty.. ended up with a pounding headache and was ill for days afterwards...

Hearth of the Home.

There is nothing nicer than being drawn into a room by a lovely log fire. Feeling the warmth around you almost like a really big welcoming Hug .

In Greek Mythology Hestia is the Goddess of the Hearth.

Interesting question! And one of the few times you can actually have both.
Yes, woodburners are now available that readily provide hot water and central heating as well as a radiant open fire should you wish it.
We spent last evening with friends who have had this system installed and linked into their existing oil fired system so they can pick and choose just by shutting or opening a couple of valves.

Lavina, Corfu in the sun go hand in hand with the ambiance of its beauty, but you have brought a new ambiance for this time of year with the open fire touch, throw in some chestnuts & other winter warmers a open fire brings, then you might just single handtly might bring in winter tourism. Ha just a thought...but that was very lovely put, even though it was about the heating...

Well, thank you razaker! I must admit to finding your post a bit hard to read though...Incidentally I have had the central heating on for half an hour but my lovely fire is blazing away and making it feel like home. The cat and the dog are curled up on the long stool in front of the fire, so everyone is happy.

For me the best thing about the open log fire is the lovely wood smell!!

It permeates the house and always reminds me of Christmas as a child, especially when Rob has a brandy as well!!!

My little wood burning stove does a grand job, but I do have to switch my little convector on in the bedroom for an hour before shower as the heat from the stove only does kitchen, lounge and dining room.

Wood, oops, Freudian slip, would like to see if I can get enough wood in the burner to keep it going through the night without burning the place down though!!!

Alikee x
