For the last few nights I have reluctantly switched on the central heating as it was a bit chilly. Tonight, however, I decided to light the tzaki. What a good decision. Not only has the fire heated the ground floor of the house but has given the soul back to the house. I have a double-sided wood burner which heats my little "snug" one side and the larger "drawing room" on the other. When I switch on the central heating it takes the chill off the house, but now I have lit the tzaki, the whole house has come alive. I cannot quite explain why, but the heart of the house is beating again.

Lavinia that sounds really poetic! Lovely description of what a living fire does. At the end of the summer, after listening to all the tax hikes we were going to be subjected to...we decided to forget the central heating and light the olive wood fire again.
Great decision! It is warm and cosy in the house if we light the fire for a couple of hours in the evening. We have just put the electric blanket back onto the bed and that will be enough heating for us for now.
You are right, the house comes to life and feels warm and welcoming again...Home in fact!!!

My other half has just been given an early Christmas pressy of a briquette log maker - so we can use up all the E2.50 papers we have bought over the last 5 years in Corfu So looking forward to sitting in the sun in the summer preparing for the winter.

Can we please share your briquette log maker? Joking apart, one of the joys of the tzaki is the wonderful smell of olive logs burning in the hearth. This is what my daughter always remarks on. When she gets off the plane just before Christmas, the smell of olive wood burning means she is well and truly back home in Kerkyra.

We have brand new eco-friendly electric ceramic convector heaters, which we have used for the last 2 nights. But like you I can't wait to light the open fire again :) x

Lavinia our log maker is yours whenever you want it[ - we can mash together:^:] over a bottle of wine !
At least if we make them in the summer they should dry out quickly.
Love the real logs on the fire - although they do go down fast when it is cold.

I prefer my central heating in the morning when it comes on with a timer and warms the house before I get up but then I light the fire in the afternoon for when it cools down in the evening.
