The parameters for luggage are clearly defined so the answer is to not try and get away with it. I have read many times on this website about people blatantly flaunting the rules regarding luggage limits and then blaming everyone except themselves. Follow the guidelines and no problems will arise.

At Murcia airport late October,not only hand luggage being sized in the cages, but weighed as well!
We being stick to the rules passengers had no problem unlike others!
What I did notice on Ryanair was---after speedy boarders
had taken their seats on the plane---doubt whether that many passengers paid for this service, people with children were not called next, but, trapped in the free for all!
One lady had a 3 year old with her and the child was not allowed to in a seat other than next to her mother, cabin crew had to make an announcement plea for some passengers to spilt up so that they could sit together, deathly silence, until it was announced once more, then, if no one was prepared to accomadate this mother and toddler the plane would not be taking off!!
No point in me offering as I was on an isle seat,s omeone eventually split up, but, what I couldn't understand was ---there were six rows of empty seats near the front of the plane that no one was allowed to use, I have seen hand luggage placed on these seats and on the floor when over head lockers are full. That reminds me---why don't passengers place their hand luggage in the over head lockers like one would do when placiing toast in a toast rack?

Maggy ... we have seen the 6 empty seat thing but the very last 6 rows at the rear going to and coming back from Sweden! When asked why they were empty the reply was it was to even out the load of the aircraft and filling the seats would make it too heavy!! Heard some nonsense in my time and this just about beats the lot especially when you consider that most people do not have hold luggage on a Ryanair flight.

Actually I remember back in the 1970's getting on a plane with a friend going to Jersey and they were seating people so many on the left and so many on the right.
They then placed our hand luggage on different seats on the plane. When we asked them why they were doing this they said to even the weight out.
Hence it was two very nervous young people who landed safely with relief in Jersey.

Flew Newcastle to Dublin with Ryanair last week and did not see anyone challenged about hand luggage even though some (including one of my friends) had bags that were clearly too big.
Our plane had 6 rows at the front empty and 6 at the back.
When you think about it, if those seats were filled by passengers weighing an average of 15 stone that would be an extra 1 1/2 tons!!
