Are you going to go through Switzerland? If you will do you will need to buy a carnet at the border, likewise Austria, but much cheaper.
Suggest going via Austria, then at Lake Constantz (Bodensee) enter Germany and drive to Colmar via the Black Forest and Freiburg- lovely scenery, not much traffic, and free!
From Colmar take the non toll road over the pass via Munster to Nancy, then it is up to you really as there is an excellent toll free national road from there on, but obviously slower than motorway.
Try and be in Colmar for the weekend of the Christmas Market- great fun, and visit the nearby village of Ribeauville if they are having their superb medieval market that weekend.
Hope this is helpful, sorry cannot give accurate idea of tolls as I try and use the toll free most of the time.

Hi Jan, Thanks for your reply but we want to go via Switzerland as it's a route we haven't taken before and we've been told that it has some stunning scenery. Chas

A severe memory test here -it's been a while and the last time was by motorbike (and from Ancona) but not withstanding that, I think it's around the £80/90 mark (each way).

Switzerland is lovely, if time leave the motorway after the San Gotthard pass and drive around the shores of Lake Lucerne before returning for more boring flatter bit to Basle.
If going in Spring you can get into Switzerland from Italy over the pass above Lago d'Isseo which comes down at San Moritz- again lovely scenery, but the pass is only open in about mid April onwards

We spent about 90e in tolls (with the credit card much easier than having to keep finding cash) so can't say exact, on that route, speed was the essence rather than the scenery this time, did it with just one stop at Mulhouse.

BenMore - when I did the bike trip from Ancona, I stayed at the Ibis, right in the centre of Colmar. Very friendly and efficient and the prices are reasonable.
I was especially impressed as I didn't get there until about 01.00 am but the young lady serving in the bar didn't hesitate to open up and book me in, despite my rather dishevelled state - it had been a long trip, for all sorts of reasons.
To add to Jan's comments about side trips from the main route, if I have the time I like to break the journey in Andermat, for a coffee. Instead of going through the Gottard Tunnel, go over the pass and up into the town. You then re-join the motorway on the other side of the tunnel.
(This was one of the reasons for my rather late arrival in Colmar. Having ridden up from Ancona, I stopped at the service station before the tunnel for dinner, before pressing on. Unfortunately, when I left, the tunnel had been closed for overnight works I so had to go over the pass anyway. However, by this time it was dark, there was still snow laying on the roads over the top (not a lot of fun on a bike wieghing 380 kilos) and the Swiss "highways dept" has decided also decided that it would be a good idea to resurface the road down from Andermatt to the motorway - yes at the same time as closing the tunnel.

Always (ten times) via Milan, Switzerland and then Mulhouse and on through France to Calais. About €50 for Italy and sim for France plus Swiss toll (well worth it). Ibis at Mulhouse (Napoleon) excellent and good value and half way. My satnav routes me within a mile of it too.

Just arrived back, not quite the same route as requested due to stopping off in Switzerland and France for a couple of nights each with friends, but agree with a previous post that suggested that Michelin Route Finder provides pretty accurate information with regards to tolls. The current fee for the Swiss road pass is 40euros.
Petrol in Italy 1.56E. France between 1.63 (motorway) and 1.52 (Supermarkets).
We had fog pretty much the whole way except in the Alps, as soon as we went to lower ground it was follow the red light in front, and the road bends on the sat-nav.

We experienced the similar issues as Bob last week - fog that delayed the docking of the Anek ferry for 11 hours and thereafter fog each morning for several hours. Not the most pleasant of things to drive in, especially when Michael Schumacher is still overtaking you at "stupid" speeds!

Hi Bob
Welcome home We had a similar experience driving back from Milan at this time of year, a few years ago. By the time we got to Calais, it felt as though my eyeballs were glued to the inside of the windscreen
